News From Westminster I was delighted to have been
elected as chairman of the Youth Employment All Party Parliamentary Group and this forms part of my regular work as your MP. It is a cross-party group, which looks at how to promote youth employment and share best practice. I am always
keen to be practical as well as theoretical, and youth employment is no exception.
I have also been asked to chair the Dorset Chamber of Commerce Young Chamber steering committee, which aims to build a bridge between the world of business and the world of education. This may be through businesses visiting schools, or by businesses hosting young people and teachers. This can widen the opportunities open to young people, helping them to gain valuable insights into careers and the skills needed for their future life.
When I was fi rst elected as a Member of Parliament, I employed a local apprentice in my constituency offi ce. He was working for me alongside following a course at Bournemouth and Poole College in Business Administration. I was delighted that at the end of the course he secured a job in London working for the Parliamentary Digital Services team, who are a key part of ensuring that MPs and Lords are able to do their jobs effectively.
I then took on an intern, who is doing a sandwich placement in my offi ce as part of his Politics and Media course at Bournemouth University. I asked him to write a few words about his experience of working for an MP:

Michael and his team, we have overseen the start of the Brexit process, the removal of one Prime Minister, the appointment of another and the election of a new President in the United States. Working for Michael has allowed me to also see the diverse challenges that individual constituents face, and the work behind the scenes to improve the situations and lives of as many people as possible. The placement has been great fun, and I would recommend the same experience to anyone else who is interested in politics.”
I also offer work experience to students from local schools, and will be hosting another work experience week at my constituency offi ce in July. Please let me know if you or anyone you know might be interested in coming along.
