Tributes paid to war heroes

BOXLEY Parish Council has iden- tified two men who died in World War I who are not named on the war memorial at Boxley Village. The two men, along with a third

who is named on the memorial, are buried in St Mary and All Saints’ Churchyard and have only recently been identified as being on theWar Grave Commission list. Boxley Parish Councillors agreed, in principle, that the names could be added to the war memo- rial and are consulting with resi- dents and trying to find family members. The names are RVS Had- low (21), Mechanic First Class RAF and William Larkin (53), Lance Corporal Royal Defence Corps. The Hadlow family is listed as

living at The King’s Arms, Boxley village and Mr R Hadlowwas born in Garlinge, Kent. The Larkins’ ad- dress is listed as The Fox and Goose,Weavering Street, and after his death his widow remarried and stayed on at the pub. The parish council would be in- terested to hear from anyone who thinks they may be related to the men or might have information that could help the parish council track any remaining family. Cllr Vic Davies, chairman of the estates committee, said: “We can’t find that these men are mentioned on any other memorial and it is only fitting thatwe try to rectify the situation.”

Flooding fears PARISH councillors raised con- cerns about a planning application for a non-hazardous waste recov- ery facility at Cleansing Service Group Ltd, Cobtree House, Forstal Road. The council said that the sitewas

in a very sensitive location next to the river and its valuable ecosystem and habitats. The council asked for stringent conditions regarding stor- age so that in the event of a flood, thewaste would not be carried into the river.

Meeting dates MEMBERS of the public are wel- come to the attend the annual parishmeeting at 7pm on Monday, May 8, at Beechen Hall, followed by the annual parish council meet- ing.

Traffic fears over plan for secondary school

MOREthan 30 residents attended the parish council’s environment com- mittee meeting to discuss plans for a school on land off New Cut Road. The applications is for a Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) School. It would accommodate 1,200 stu-

dents and have its entrance at the junction of Grovewood Drive South, where a roundabout would be created. With limited on-site parking and

so many additional vehicles move- ments, residents voiced their grave concerns and objections. The environment committee,

whilstwelcoming the building of a quality school, is objecting to the

Kestrels get nest boxes

THREE nesting boxes for kestrels have been erected by Boxley Parish Council. They are located at Weavering Diamond Jubilee Orchard,Weaver- ing Heath and Dove Hill Allot- ments. The boxes were made by Grove

Green Scouts, and it is hoped that kestrels or owls will take up resi- dence in them at some point. The boxes do not have cameras,

but the parish council has provided a kestrel box with a camera at Kent Wildlife Trust’s headquarters at Tyland Barn, Sandling. The trust’s website live streams

views frominside the nest box dur- ing office hours.

Hunting through archives

THE parish is hoping to locate archives dating back to its forma- tion in 1894, so that details can be placed on two honour boards. The boards, one for past chairmen and the other for residents who

the parish council has identified as having made a significant con- tribution to the community, will be placed at Beechen Hall, but records dating back prior to 1932 have not yet been located in the county archives.

site of the application due to high- way issues. Residents heard that the validity

of the vehicle journeys data used to reach the sustainability conclusions in the Transport Assessment Docu- ment (TAD) was questionable and not considered by members as a true reflection of the vehicular movements expected. The evidence produced on future traffic caused by committed development was also based on an incomplete list. Inconsistencies within the TAD were also identified, including the

catchment area of the school and how students would travel to it. Members also identified noise,

light and air pollution, environ- mental and landscaping concerns. The cumulative effect of an addi- tional 1,200 students added to the 3,044 students already in what is a small areawas also highlighted. Should MBC look to permit the

development, the parish council is asking for single yellow lines, with a one-hour parking restriction along Grovewood Drive South and in the adjacent roads and closes.

Group targets

illegal bikers MEMBERS welcomed a recent crackdown on nuisance bikes and illegal vehicles in Boxley Warren, Walderslade Woods and Bredhurst Woods, which resulted in 16 driv- ers being stopped. Patrols including PCSOs and of-

ficers from the police Rural Liaison Team visited the areas on motor- bikes and in unmarked cars. They worked with Boxley and Bredhurst Councils, Kent County Council, Boxley Warren Nature Reserve management committee and Bred- hurst Woodland Action Group. Three motorbikes were stopped

on Scragged Oak Lane, Detling and the riders had no valid licence or insurance. A stolen motorbike was recovered after being stopped near the petrol station on Blue Bell Hill, It had false number plates and a false chassis number on the frame. PCSO Matthew Adlington thanked members of the public for providing information and urged people to continue to report any is- sues and if possible, supply regis- tration numbers. Boxley Parish Council chairman

Bob Hinder, who also chairs the Friends of BoxleyWarren, thanked the officers and said their visit was welcome by the volunteer group.
