Fireworks show set to go with a bang

THIS year’s Bearsted fireworks display is set to be better than ever, with the fireworks set to music by a pyrotechnics company. Fantastic Fireworks, who are

New clerk BEARSTED Parish Council has an- nounced the appointment of a new clerk, Sarah Lewis. Sarah, who lives in Bearsted,

starts the part-time role in May, having previously been the deputy clerk of Tovil Parish Council. The council will also appoint an

admin assistant in the next three months, to support the office. Sarah, a qualified midwife, first

moved to Bearsted in 1985 with her parents as a teenager and returned in 2012 with her husband. A council spokesman said: “We

are delighted that Sarah has ac- cepted the role and look forward to working with her to support the community to make Bearsted the best it can be. “

Crime report PCSO Matt Adlington reported several crimes in the Bearsted area in March and early April, including a shed burglary in Lenside (nothing taken), a break in at the Amazon hairdressing salon (damage to rear door and £40 stolen) and the theft of a sentimentally valuable grand- father clock in a burglary in Caring Lane.

Art ‘beggar’ COMMUNITY warden Sally Williams has reported instances of a young woman calling door-to- door selling pieces of art. The practice was dismissed as a

“form of begging” because she be- comes aggressive if she is refused on the doorstep. She was also reported to be con- ducting similar activities in Madg- inford.

Road repairs WORKon potholes in the Landway has started by contractors marking squares around the affected areas. Bearsted parish councillor Richard Ash claimed that the road needs “total resurfacing” as it is a bus route.

Market back on Green

THE Bearsted Farmers’ Market re- launches this summer, with a wider variety, more stalls and a new name – Bearsted Market on the Green. It will retain its core stalls of arti-

san and locally-produced edible and non-edible goods, but include more arts and crafts. In planning the changes, the mar-

ket manager and members of the parish council’s communications and community committee had lis- tened to feedback from residents and stallholders. Committee chairman Dan Con-

ner said: “The parish council really wants to support the market and help it to thrive and grow.

“We know that there are many talented local people making beau- tiful products and we hope they will take up the opportunity to show off their wares.” As well as more craft stalls, the relaunched market will also have more hot food stalls and the added convenience of portable toilets. The market takes place on Bearsted Green on the fourth Sun- day of every month, from 9am to 1pm. The next market is on Sun- day, May 28. Watch out for infor- mation on Facebook. Anyone wishing to apply for a

stall should email clerk@bearsted- parishcouncil.gov.uk or send a message through Facebook.

twice winners of the British Na- tional Fireworks Championship, will lay on a spectacular 20 minute show. The company has been putting on displays across the whole of theUK for about three decades, including a huge event to celebrate the 800th an- niversary of the City of Liverpool, watched by 100,000 people. Bearsted’s rather smaller event

will be held at the Elizabeth Harvie Field on Friday, November 3. The cost to the parish council will

be recovered by the sale of tickets which, like last year, will only be available to buy online. Councillor PaulYoung said: “Sell-

ing tickets online exclusively was a great success last year. It proved popular with local residents, kept

administrative costs down and helped to speed up entry on the night.” There will be up to 3,000 tickets

available and residents are advised to snap them up as soon as they go

on sale. The eventwas very nearly a sell-out last year. The link to online ticket sales will

be available from early September through the parish council’s face- book page andwebsite.

Bus concerns BOROUGH councillor Val Springett has raised concerns about the “unreliability” of the number 19 school bus “which frequently fails to turn up at all”. This means that parents are

forced to rush their children to school by car. Cllr Springett raised this issue

with the Joint Transportation Board. She told parish councillors: “It

was explained that there have been a lot of management changes within Arriva, and hopefully, with the revised timetables now in place, it is anticipated that the reliability should improve. “I did not argue against the new,

longer route as it may well be that the increased frequency and hope- fully the improved reliability will be well-received by residents.”

Thanks, Mike PARISH council chair Fiona Red- man thanked the recently-resigned borough councillor Mike Revell for his service to the area. Mr Revell, who has moved to Sussex for family reasons, was elected in May 2016 as the Conser- vative member for Bearsted. The by-election to replace him takes place on May 4.
