Emma proud to show off curves

A PLUS-size mum, who suffered taunts of “fatty” from school bul- lies, has decided to show off her curves in a national beauty pag- eant.

After being named Miss Maid-

stone Curve in January, Emma Head will be competing against regional finalists to be crowned Miss British Beauty Curve 2017. The competition, which takes

place at Maidstone’s Hazlitt The- atre on August 5, will have four rounds, including swimwear and a glitz and glamour section. Emma, who is the mother of two

sons, aged four and 18 months, says she was always a “big girl” who was singled out by school bullies, and is still called names in the street. A hairdressing student at Mid-

Kent College, Emma lives in Gillingham and her parents live in Bearsted. She has raised £200 through crowd-funding towards the expense of taking part in the contest. Finding suitable clothes in a size 22 has been a challenge, she says, as most are frumpy, so she has to shop online. She thanked her family and friends for their support, adding: “This is my chance to do some- thing I can be proud of. I hope to inspire many other women along the way, make people proud of who they are, to have body confi- dence, whatever their size.” The annual Miss British Beauty

Curve pageant aims to encourage women of different shapes and sizes to take part. This year’s spectacular show is the sixth and two other titles –Ms

£1,300 bill for fly-tipper

ASCRAPdealer has been ordered to pay nearly £1,300 by a court after flytipping rubbish which he had been paid to dispose of. Richard Mayhew, of Boxley, de-

nied the offence at Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court on Wednes- day, April 12, but was found guilty. The court heard that Mayhew,

owner of Rusty’s scrap metal col- lection and waste removal, col- lectedwaste including a mattress, bed base, wooden joists, pictures, black sacks and other household rubbish, from a house in Water- ingbury . A few days later, a Tonbridge

and Malling Council officer found waste in Old Chatham Road, off Blue Bell Hill. Items were traced back to the house in

Wateringbury and the house- holder confirmed she had paid Mayhew to dispose of the items. Richard Mayhew, of Boxley, de-

nied the offence at Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court, butwas found guilty. He was fined £420 with £650 costs, £183 clear-up/compen- sation costs and a victim sur- charge of £42. Robert Styles, the borough council’s director of street scene, leisure and technical services, said: “Fly-tipping is a crime – it’s antisocial, unsightly and haz- ardous and will not be tolerated in Tonbridge and Malling. “The estimated cost of clearing

up fly-tipping for 2015-2016 was £31,860 – money that would have been much better spent on serv- ices for our residents.”
