New Addition to Cub Scouts
Spring is here and I couldn’t be more excited to welcome our newest, and youngest participants, our Lion Cub families, to the Scouting program.
In the fall of 2016, our Council opted to participate in a national pilot program to include Kindergarteners in Scouting for the first time. We approached this experiment cautiously, following the adage that “you
only get one chance to make a first impression.” The thinking was that we wanted to ensure a strong, positive experience so that these first time Scouts would be more likely to continue into Tiger Cubs. With this in mind, we invited packs that met certain criteria to consider participation. Fifty three packs from across the council were selected and participated in the Lion program, and 378 new Lions joined. By all accounts, the experiment was successful.
At the national level, here’s a snapshot of participation in the Lion pilot during 2016-17 school year:
- 204 councils were approved to participate (more than 75%) - 30,000+ youth registered as a Lion
- 4,300 Cub Scout packs had one or more registered Lions
All Cub Scout packs are invited to take part in Lions this coming fall. Participating packs will need to appoint a Lion Guide before recruitment in the fall, and ensure that guides participate in training before recruiting members in August/ September. Guides help ensure that parents take turns leading meetings and planning activities. They provide support to the group throughout the year. The national organization anticipates that Lions will be officially incorporated into the Cub Scout program in the 2018-19 program year.
During our first year of the pilot, we learned that Lions and parents are eager to participate and are a very invested group. Parents want to get involved, which should make recruiting future den and pack leadership a bit easier. Early indicators suggest that as many as 72% of this year’s registered Lion families were new to Scouting – so it’s also important to help them understand what is next for them along the Scouting trail. Much of the specifics we have learned in the first year will be incorporated into our summer training for Lion Guides for the fall, giving them a leg up over our first year participants.
Overall, our first year with Lions was a big success. Be sure to make plans for your Cub Scout pack to get on board for the fall of 2017! Yours in Scouting,
