Dubai welcomed 1.8 million visitors from India in 2016, up 12.5 percent, while Abu Dhabi saw almost 323,400 Indian tourists, up 15 percent, making the South Asian country one of the top source markets for both emirates. At this year’s Arabian Travel Market, Dubai’s

Consul General of India, Vipul, urged more UAE nationals to now consider taking a trip in the other direction. He said: “The contacts between the two countries go back centuries and, we feel, that there is a lot of potential for Emiratis who want to visit India.” At an ATM press conference, Vipul discussed

India Tourism’s theme for this year’s show, ‘Yoga & Wellness’, and talked about the celebrations planned for the International Day of Yoga on June 21 in both the UAE and India. “Dubai in particular has embraced yoga in

a way that no other city has,” he said. India has been named the largest growing

outbound tourism market in percentage terms, with the UNWTO predicting 50 million Indians will travel overseas annually by 2020. More than 300 flights a week already oper- ate between Abu Dhabi and major Indian cities,

and in 2016, Etihad Airways announced an expan- sion of its Indian network through its partner Jet Airways – with the two airlines adding 28 weekly flights and three new destinations. Last year, Air India Express also added three

non-stop flights from Sharjah to both Chandi- garh and Tiruchirappalli, and in Dubai, airport authorities set a target to add 50,000 seats per week to existing Indian routes. Indian tourists are also making their mark

across the Middle East, with rising numbers in Oman and Qatar, among other destinations. Of the three million tourists who visited Oman in 2016, almost 10 percent were Indian, and overall the sultanate has seen a 60 percent increase in visitors from India in the past five years. Qatar welcomed almost 183,000 Indian tour-

ists in the first half of 2016 – a figure which is set to increase once new visa rules are introduced. India has been in the spotlight at this year’s
