SULLIVAN – For those traveling Downeast through Sullivan on your way to Heaven you must have noticed the building at the entrance to Sorrento. It was formerly a convenience store, then a short time used by commercial fi shermen and then an auction house. As the auction house, it got painted blue, with several mural paintings and a large sign on pole with a pirate in the crow’s nest. Last summer the building was sold and it is now the new store for Nautilus Marine, who has gone into the chandlery business. The store is run by Jason Brooks, who

said “It all started with Jimmy [Patten] talking about wanting to branch out and try diff erent things to expand the business. We looked into buying Matthews Country Store in Steuben, which wasn’t going to work out for us. I came up with the idea to maybe branch out into marine hardware, there really wasn’t a lot in this area. It just so happened that this place came up for sale. The owner had it for sale and we talked to him and made the deal last summer. We had to completely redo the whole inside of the building, which took a little bit longer than we anticipated. We were planning to be open last September, but things popped up. Once we are all fi nished around October we started fi lling things up. We had also been inter- viewing the fi shermen in the area trying to fi gure out what they wanted. We then went to a few tradeshows and talked to other vendors and stores to see what works for them. Right now we are just in the process of getting the basics in the store.” When interviewing the fi shermen as

to what they needed Jason found, “It really depends on the time of year is what we have discovered. This time of year it seems that a lot of people are looking for trap supplies. However, some guys are still fi shing, they

fi sh year around, but a majority of them are seasonal. The seasonal fi shermen have their boats out of the water right now and they’ve got to start getting their traps ready for the spring. They are all scrambling around trying to get ready and we are trying to accommodate them, and that hasn’t been as easy as we were hoping.” Nautilus Marine has developed a strong

relationship with Hamilton Marine and Brooks Trap. Jason added, “We have had a long-standing relationship with Hamilton Marine and if you look through their catalog you will fi nd items that we make for them. At the end of the day anything that we can get that is Maine made we do that fi rst. We want to help the little guy because we are a little guy.” What are they carrying in the store,

Jason explained: “We have got a selection of diesel oil, hydraulic steering fl uid, tarps, oil pads, poly balls for mooring lines, safety equipment (lifejackets, fl ares) and all the stuff that the Coast Guard requires for the guys who go off shore; a good selection of lightbulbs, fuses, a small selection of outboard propellers, threaded rod, gas cans, paint, cleaning supplies, marine quality adhesives, bait bags, gloves. Our real bread- and-butter is our fastener selection,” added Jason. “We found that every store that you go to has one thing that they are really known for and we are hoping that ours is going to be stainless fasteners. We have a really good connection that in my opinion can’t be beat. We have type 3-1-6 stainless as well as 18-8 which is a lower grade but still very strong and very durable.” “We are missing some stuff ,” said Ja-

son, “but we’re in the process of getting it. We are just trying to provide everything that the fi shermen are going to want. We want to

be kind of a convenience store, but we don’t want to have the convenience store prices. Everyone knows that Nautilus Marine

is a major player in the propeller business. Jason said, “At this time we are strictly just a drop-off point for a lot of the guys Downeast that don’t want to make the trip all the way to Trenton. As a matter of fact I just had a guy drop a wheel off from Cutler the other day. It is only a half hour to get there now, but in the summer time it is going to be a blessing for those guys. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to drive in that area in the summertime.” On the 15th

of April they held a grand

opening at and they were off ering 50 pound mushroom anchors for $42.50 instead of the regular $49.99. They were also having other specials, off er some gift certifi cates, T-shirts and food. Unfortunately, there was not going to be any popcorn as the motor in the popcorn machine had a fatal malfunction at the Maine Boatbuilder’s Show.

As more people have learned about

Nautilus’ new store business has been in- creasing. Jason added, “Some people don’t know we are here yet, or what we are doing. It is really picking up as word-of-mouth is getting out. Most of the people are saying that they are stopping because they want to know what is going on. ” If you are Downeast and need marine

items Nautilus’ new store probably can help and save you time and wear and tear on your vehicle!
