Show the end of March I was not sure what to expect. What would the new venue be like, would parking be a problem and the biggest question of all, would the people come? There had been a number of people speak out against going to the new site and that the show was on its last legs. A number of exhibitors took a wait and see attitude and decided to pass on going this year. As we were setting up, it became quick-

ly obvious that the new venue was much easier to deal with and nicer all around. We all know a number of the people loved the old buildings and they did have a special aura about them and there is no question that most people hate change. However, while I was setting up several people commented on how they liked the new facility. Staging in went the best it ever has, the building was clean, bigger booths and wider aisles, we were standing on astro-turf, there was a restaurant with a full bar and most of those sailboat guys were able to put up their masts. As Friday approached we all hoped the

people would show up and when the doors opened we were pleasantly surprised to fi nd a good crowd coming in. The show organiz- ers were concerned about parking and made every attempt to make sure everything went smoothly and it seemed to. Saturday was another good day and Sunday, as usual was a bit slower, but steady. In the end the show organizers said that the numbers were equal to the year before, but the big positive was that the new venue worked extremely well and everyone seemed more than pleased. A number of former exhibitors, who did not attend the show this year, walked through

and were pleasantly surprised and most said that they would defi nitely be back next year. This show has a positive impact for

many of the exhibitors, whether or not they are a boatbuilder. I do know that SW Boatworks in Lamoine had a person come into their booth who said that he had been following them on the Internet and was hap- py to see them at the show and added that he wanted to buy one of their boats. He was scheduled to go up to their shop a week or so after the show to fi nalize the deal. I also heard from other exhibitors how important this show is to their business. During the show I asked both exhibitors

and attendees if they were pleased and they were. They liked the new venue, the people came, but many said more boatbuilders needed to be there. Parking was a slight issue, but where is it not. It was defi nitely a problem at the old site and look at New- port, most have to park in the next town two miles away. Trying to be objective in my assessment, I would say that the show was successful, but it will be better. With the positive buzz one can rightly guess that there will defi nitely be more boatbuilders and other exhibitors next year. The show organizers have already an-

nounced that the show is in the same location and they sent out a questionnaire asking for feedback. They have also looked at ad- dressing a few minor issues, like putting in a bigger door so they can get bigger boats in and adding parking. Everyone is committed to making this a great boat show, one that is good for both the exhibitor and the attendee. Old buildings were an attraction, but really it is all about the boats!
