“Speedway Ride ‘n’ Slide Dayz is the UK’s first-ever touring all inclusive Speedway Experience operator in the UK.” That’s a fairly accurate summation of what I would witness – not, I hasten to add as a fully-paid up member of a fairly exclusive clientele but from a spectating vantage – throughout a day in which seven hours or so seemed to pass in a matter of minutes!
Of course, I could have signed up, with Claire telling me: “We have a lot of people who have
never ridden a bike in their life!” But I had no inclination to become one of their oldest-ever customers and settled for the cushy life of listening and learning.
And I have to admit that I was
more than impressed by the professionalism of the whole thing.
Paine, Ride ‘n’ Slide’s only full- time employee, has a way about him. He’s neither bossy nor willing to be taken for a ride (so to speak) but adds a touch of humour to an often very serious piece of advice to the day’s clients.
He tries to put them at ease straight away in an introductory session, telling them: “It’s about
respect – respect for what the bikes can do.”
He was cleverly explaining that despite its power, a speedway bike doesn’t have a mind of its own and won’t suddenly rear up and go careering around the boards, flat out at full speed – unless someone grabs a handful of throttle.
Customers had a choice of engine capacity and were encouraged to start off on the 125cc and work their way up. He went on: “This is your day, the whole of the next four hours or so revolve around you, it’s all to give you the best opportunity to get the best out of it.” Paine’s enthusiasm was infectious and he was clearly
