AT LEAST dawn had just broken when Russell Paine clambered into the cabin of his 40-foot artic. His partner Claire Evans was behind the wheel of an accompanying van and they were leaving their Stevenage home bright and early to hit the A1(M), heading north for Peterborough.
The blue lorry and white van ghosted through the electronic gates at the East of England Showground and pointed their noses towards the main arena. There, parked outside the
recently swept and spotlessly clean pits, they disgorged their unusual, special load. Thirty-something speedway
bikes, all meticulously cleaned, washed and sparkling with their brightly coloured engine covers glistening from loving attention came out of the van.
And out of the back of the van came scores of kevlars, pairs of boots, under armour, helmets and even 20-odd freshly washed balaclavas.
By the time their first users
rolled up, the machines had been carefully lined up, soldier- like, in rows in the pits. And the rest of the gear was
on trestle tables, ready to be worn for a day at the races. Off the Beaten Track were at the first of this year’s 14 Ride ‘n’ Slide Experience track days and the weather was being
exceptionally kind on a late spring morning and afternoon. Russ – the lead instructor,
organiser and a former rider – and Claire, who co-ordinates the events on the day, advertise the Experience on their website: “Ever fancied taking a 500cc bike with no brakes or gears, that can hit 0-60 mph in less than three seconds and putting it through its paces? Well, now you can!
