THE STUDIO SALE OF
JOHN MURRAY THOMSON RSA RSW PSSA (1885-1974)
Sold on behalf of a Private client acting as executor of the late artist’s deceased son.
Born in Crieff, Perthshire, 1885, John Murray Thomson was known as a painter of animals and birds in both oil and watercolour. Educated at the local Morrisson’s Academy, he went on to Edinburgh School of Art where he received a Carnegie Travelling Scholarship in the RSA Life Classes. This enabled him to travel to Paris where he undertook further studies at the Academie Julian. Whilst abroad he worked in zoos, an influence seen clearly throughout his favourite subject; birds and animals in their natural settings. He was appointed as a member of staff at Edinburgh College of Art where he taught animal drawing and painting for eleven years. Author and illustrator of ‘Animals We Know’, he died in Edinburgh in 1974. He had many interests outside of Art including collecting and identifying Scottish Provincial silver.

Represented in Aberdeen Art Gallery, Paisley Art Gallery, Perth Art Gallery, Edinburgh City Collection.
The Studio Sale represents a broad range of the artist’s work from finished oils and accomplished watercolours to sketches, drawings and a rare etching. These works are complemented by the context in which they were unearthed, surrounded by palettes, easels, brushes, palette knives and paint boxes, RSA presentation scrolls in Japanned metal cases, attache cases and related ephemera including the name plaque from his Studio door.
Offered for sale across 59 lots, there are 55 lots relating to John Murray Thomson including some of the Scottish Provincial silver that he was passionate about collecting (see lots 448 through to 453) and 4 lots relating to his wife, Ellen M. Murray Thomson.
