Upton In Bloom Horticultural Show


Traditionally the Horticultural Show has taken place on the fi rst Saturday of September. Upton in Bloom members have listened to local residents and decided to bring forward the date to mid- August, probably Saturday 19th August for 2017. We hope that this will more appropriately meet the needs of potential entrants.


Planting of Beds


This will follow the pattern established last year – many of the beds will celebrate particular anniversaries, for example Upton Library 40 years at Upton, and 1st Upton Guides 100 years of Upton Guiding. We will also be looking to extend our range of sustainable planting for sound and necessary environmental reasons.


The northern entrance to Upton will be enhanced by the installation of a new planter on the grass verge at the entrance to Beacon Hill Touring Park – to be sponsored by the site owners.


Hedgehogs


We were shocked by the BBC Gardeners World magazine report in 2016, which found that 51% of people who replied did not see any hedgehogs in their gardens at all in that year. One in eight reported seeing them regularly, whilst one third saw them very very occasionally – an appalling set of statistics. We can all help by putting out food for them (cat food, nuts and raisins, but not milk to which they are intolerant). We can also make sure that gaps exist in fencing so they can squeeze through or under, whilst an old upturned pot or plant container will offer somewhere to hibernate, as will a pile of logs or garden debris.
