Automated warehouse for roll handling at Stora Enso’s Imatra mills
S
tora Enso is investing €70 million in a new polyethylene (PE) extrusion coating
line and an automated roll warehouse at its Imatra mills in Finland. The Imatra complex, which
comprises the Kaukopää and Tainionkoski mills, has a capacity to produce more than one million tons per year of carton board and speciality packaging paper. The investment will enable Stora Enso to meet increasing customer demand for food service board and liquid packaging board. The new automated roll
warehouse (ARW) has been ordered from Pesmel, with commissioning expected to be completed early in the fourth quarter of 2017. The roll handling system is one of the biggest projects in the history of Pesmel, and will require 80 man years of work,
says the company. “The system is good example of our Material Flow How concept, where the high bay
warehouse synchronises the production processes flexibly and efficiently. With packing and loading included, all the
components of our concept will be delivered,” says vice president of Pesmel’s paper division Kaj Fahllund. The heart of the new
system’s layout is Pesmel’s TransRoll ARW concept, which is connected with seven in- out connections at different floor levels between the mill production and converting lines. It has buffering capacity of around 30,000 tons for intermediate rolls to be used in the mill’s converting lines, and also for finished rolls to be shipped out to end customers. This storing volume can be
expanded as required in the future, along with the number of its connections. The footprint of the warehouse covers about 4,500 square metres with a
