Meet the GWAAC Doctors Great Western Air Ambulance Charity operates to the Gold Standard of Critical Care, which means rushing a Critical care Doctor and Critical Care Paramedic to the scene of an incident.

W

e have a rota of 23 doctors, who work a few days a month with us. They are all highly

trained, and are senior consultants in hospitals across the region. All our doctors know the importance of pre- hospital care, and the benefits it can bring to the patient. From an emergency blood transfusion

Dr Matt Thomas – GWAAC lead doctor I work for GWAAC as I live and raise my family in the region. I see the important work that is done. It makes me feel safe to know that GWAAC can respond quickly and I can give something back. The ambulance service does an excellent job in difficult circumstances and the charity provides that extra skill and equipment as well as a helicopter to get there rapidly. GWAAC is a great organisation providing a crucial skill in a lovely and diverse part of the world.

at the side of the road, to specialist drugs, or treating a cardiac arrest in the home, these early interventions can be the difference between life or death. This is why they give up a few days a month of

their own time to work with us, and help us to give our patients the best possible chance of survival.

Meet some of our dedicated doctors

Dr Tom James As a doctor the greatest reward is being able to deliver life changing treatment to patients when they require it. I really enjoy working with GWAAC as everyone here is fully focused on our mission of delivering the highest level of critical care to patients as quickly as possible. Every intervention we deliver is a combined effort requiring the experience of the critical care paramedics and doctors, the skills of the pilots and the hard work of the charity and I feel privileged to be a part of such a great team.

Dr Scott Grier I am now in my fourth year working for Great Western Air Ambulance Charity and I greatly enjoy the work. As part of the Critical Care Team it is immensely rewarding delivering high quality critical care interventions to ill and injured patients despite the challenges of the pre-hospital environment. The way in which we work, train and reflect upon our cases makes us all better clinicians, and I have found that my work for GWAAC has given me new skills that I have integrated into my in-hospital practice. I believe we genuinely make a difference to the patients we treat and this is what makes coming to work at GWAAC so satisfying.
