Woodcut Farm appeal ‘could be successful’
THEBearsted and Thurnham Soci- ety has expressed dismay that an appeal has been lodged against planning refusal for Woodcut Farm near junction 8 on the A20. The society claims it is “a wholly speculative mixed commercial de- velopment on50 acres” of green field land by Roxhill Developments. An application for a commercial scheme was turned down last year by Maidstone Borough Council. In a letter from chairman Denis Spooner, pictured, to society mem- bers, he states: “MBC has always re- fused applications for large scale commercial development around junction 8, but the society is fearful it may now be prepared to accept it!” Downs Mail reader Brian McKeon
said: “Aprecedent has been setwhen KIMS was allowed to be built on Green Belt land at J7 of the M20. Every legal argument put forward for not building at J8 is now super- seded. Perhaps the parish council should have taken a tougher stance with KIMS. As it stands J8 will be built on in time.”

Local MPs, Leeds Castle manage-
ment and numerous borough, county and parish councillors are aghast the plan has resurfaced. In February 2016, MBC published its Draft Maidstone Borough LocalPlan and identified Woodcut Farm as a potential employment site.Whenthe Local Plan inquiry was held, the in- spector Robert Mellor did not sug- gest it was struck from it. MBC sources say it has to keep Woodcut Farm alive because the authority can show employment opportunities at the site to complement its house- building plans. MBCconfirmed that an appeal has been lodged against the refusal.
