News Show director
stands down A LEADING financial mind behind the Kent County Show has stood down after nine years in the job. Glyn Charlton,
from Maidstone, has been honorary finance director of the Kent County Agricultural Soci- ety and Kent Event Centre at Detling since 2008.
He was instrumental in trans- forming theCornwallis building into theEmsonConference facility and as a member of the 11-man board of di- rectors instigated the building of the Maidstone Exhibition Hall. He also took a keen interest in updating and improving the Society’s Scragged Oak Caravan Park. Mr Charlton (70) has been
awarded the President’sAward and made an honorary vice-president in recognition of his work. Society chairman Kevin Attwood
said: “The measure of Glyn’s contri- bution and what he should be re- membered for, is that he leaves the Society in a much better place than he found it.” Hugh Summerfield, who replaces
him, comes from a farming family in the Ashford area and trained as a chartered accountant.

‘Traffic forced me to give up cafe dream’
THE Cavendish Tearooms in Bearsted is set to change hands, with traffic congestion to blame. It is hoped the venture’s seven part-time staff who have worked alongside owner Amanda Harris will keep their jobs, with an offer on the business already made. But for Mrs Harris (52), who says
while she has enjoyed running the business, her daily drive, battling with the traffic has proved a constant source of frustration – sitting sta- tionery on Blue Bell Hill and backed up behind lorries almost daily. She said: “I made a couple of trips
to visit the premises which took about half an hour, and it’s a lovely place and a good location. But when I took on the business two years ago it was the summer of Operation Stack and even today I have to allow a good hour to get in to open up at 8.30am. “If I could lift the business up and
move it closer to my home in Gravesend then I would have con- tinued with it.” In spite of the traffic, the former

school teacher says she is pleased she followed her dream of making cakes for a living and opening the tearoom and cakes supplies outlet two years ago. She added: “I will carry on making cakes, but I’m not sure what form that will take just yet. I’m going to give myself a month off to re-evaluate first.” She also plans to take a well- earned holiday, after being limited to aweek off inNovember since tak- ing on the business, and is looking
forward to spending more time with her three grown-up children. She thanked all her staffwhohave helped establish the business, which has become popular for hen parties, afternoon tea events and for baby showers. The tearoom in Cavendish Way
was formally a coffee and gift shop and prior to thatwas the headquar- ters of Clive Emson auctioneers, which has sincemoved to Rocky Hill on the London Road in Maidstone.
