arms, Paisley says “It’s football season!” and kicks into the college football anthem “Country Na- tion,” bringing out the lovely West Virginia Mountaineer cheerleaders who dance through the audience. His rap with the audience about oppos- ing teams is fun. And his tribute to the biggest country band of the 80’s, “Old Alabama,” is pretty great. He ends it like Alabama’s “Mountain Music” with himself and the fiddle player ripping it to shreds. Paisley gives his all during the show, performing many of his best songs from “She’s Everything” to “Ticks,” “I’m Gonna Miss Her” to “Mud On the Tires,” “Then,” and the official theme song of West Virginia, John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads.” It’s an amazing concert from one of country music’s best…Back in 1987 I happened to be at a friends house who had HBO and Cinemax. At the time, I myself had nei- ther. My friend said, “Hey, you wanna watch the Roy Orbison special tonight?” I said “sure.” I al- ways loved Roy’s oh-so-smooth voice. I had no idea just what a nstar-studded affair the concert would be. Filmed in black and white and loaded to the brim with superstars. The concert was called Roy Orbison: Black and White Night, and it rocked my world. Now, 30 years later, the newly remastered Black and White Night 30 (Roy’s Boys/Legacy) brings back all of that magic, expanded, with all new, never before seen footage, camera angles – it’s been re-imagined, without all of the distracting audience cutaways. The concert, filmed on September 30, 1987, when Roy was 51 years old, there was no way of know- ing that the icon was only a year away from his untimely death. The show features virtually all of Orbison’s massive hits, including the classic “In Dreams,” which had helped boost his comeback after being featured in David Lynch’s landmark film Blue Velvet. Bear in mind that this is not a reissue. Because the show was shot with seven cameras, Roy’s sons were able to re-edit the en- tire show, placing the songs in the correct order of the set list. The backing band was Elvis Pres- ley’s TCB Band, James Burton, Glen D, Hardin, Jerry Scheff and Ron Tutt. The guest list reads like a who’s who of rock and roll -Bruce Spring- steen, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnette, k.d. laing, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Tom Waits and Jennifer Warnes. Whew! There are many magic moments, with some of rocks

finest voices, and Costello on harmonica and gui- tar, Springsteen on guitar – the list goes on. Roy is as smooth as Tennessee Whiskey on classics like “Crying,” “Only the Lonley,” “The Comedi- ans”(co-written by Roy and Costello), “Dream Baby,” “Blue Bayou,” a previously inseen “Blue Angel” and an alternate version of “Oh Pretty Woman.” Amazing. Also on the disc, the “secret” concert that fol- lowed for friends, with alternate ren- ditions of five Orbi- son classics including “Candy- man” and “Dream You.” If that wasn’t enough, there’s a 33-minute documentary featuring rehearsal footage and in- terviews with many of the stars. Also available is an audio cd of Black and White Night 30. Those who purchase the DVD/Blu Ray receive a free download of the audio. This one is serious rock and roll history folks. No one ever sang like Roy Orbison. No one! Buffalo says “Get it!” . . . Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love the follow up to 2015’s award-winning film Coat of Many Colors, is now available on DVD from Warner Brothers. At the same time, a winter storm threatens their homestead. Alyvia Alyn Lind returns as Dolly is a film that is destined to become one of the movies the family watches every year during the Holi- days. The movie includes four featurettes that only add to the spirit of this fine movie. •
