Sonny Moorman

by Michael Buffalo Smith More than just a Blues-Rock artist,

award-winning guitar player Sonny Moorman balances his signature smoking-hot riffs with a hard-rocking precision and feel born deep in the Blues ethos. Seeming to channel inspi- ration from elsewhere, his world-class playing is at once both transcendental and firmly grounded in reality, captivating audiences na- tionwide. The music is original, complex and never stale, with relatable lyrics and a sound that conjures up masters like Duane Allman, Lonnie Mack, and Freddy King. Still, Moor- man has forged his own intoxicating style throughout his decades-long career, which firmly establishes him as one of the last great authentic roadhouse players. We spoke with Sonny about his life,

music and the blues.

First of all, I want to say thank you for participating in the event that we put

OHIO BLUES MAN : AN INTERVIEW

on for the Big House down in Macon, Georgia recently and man oh man! Everybody was commenting about you and your playing… (Laughs) I’m sorry. I apologize!

No, they were all talking about how great you were – yeah, that’s right, and not only that, they were talking about what a nice person you are, too, and you know, that goes a long way, too. I mean, it’s one thing to be a great musi- cian but if you can back it up by being a good human being I think that’s a good thing, you know. Well, I gotta tell ya, everybody down there was so nice to me. It was just a pleasure to be there. I mean, I always enjoy spending time with Willie Perkins when I can.We go back pretty far at this point.

Willie rocks. But you know, everybody was nice. I think it’s just the idea that we all like similar things kind of makes for a similar pile of people. Everybody that was there has a love of what I would consider “real music” and that goes a long way toward people being on the same page, I think.

It does. Well, you were talking about Willie Perkins, when he found out that I was going to put this show together he goes, “You need to get Sonny.” And I was like, “Do you know Sonny?” “Well, yeah, I think I do.” (Laughs) He’s a great promoter for you, that’s for sure. He’s written me a couple of times since he found we were going to do the inter- view but…
