October 2, 1926 January 15, 2017 Maria Delia Vela Ibanez, best known as “Mrs. Dee,” 90, of San Diego, Texas, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017. She was born in San Diego, Texas on October 2, 1926, to the late Miguel and Rosaura Vela. Mrs. Dee was an avid seamstress and an amazing cook. She attended Texas A in Kingsville, Texas where she received her BA degree with honors, with a double master’s. She retired as Chief Executive Officer for Duval County Co-Op at San Diego (TX) ISD. She also served as a City Council member for the City of San Diego. Mrs. Dee moved to Bay City, Texas 10 years ago and made it her new home. She enjoyed her family visits, playing dominoes with family and friends, making tamales, listening to music, playing with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her neighbor’s children. June 12, 1965 February 5, 2017 Bridget Pompa-Hogan passed away with her family by her side on February 5, 2017, at UCSD Medical Center. Born in Calexico, California, on June 12, 1965, Bridget graduated from Central Union High School in El Centro in 1983 and earned an Accounting degree from San Diego State University in 1988. On January 20, 1990, she married Allen Hogan, with whom she had two daughters. Bridget was a Certified Public Accountant and partner at Covell & Hogan LLP.

June 29, 1975 July 17, 2016 Deborah Jean Gadzala, age 41, passed away on July 17, 2016, in San Diego, California, of addiction- related causes. Born in Arizona, she spent much of her life in San Diego and lived briefly in Barstow, California with her fiancé. A loving mother, she found solace in reading, writing, music, and surrealist artwork. She is survived by her mother, Gail; brothers Patrick and Andy; sister Abigail; four children ages 15, 13, and twins, 8; and fiancé, Nathan and his son, age 7. During her twenties she traveled extensively with the San Diego band Crash Worship. She loved peacocks, elephants, tuberoses, peonies, chocolate, and was prominent with the local music scene, supporting bands such as Three Mile Pilot, Drive Like Jehu, and the Night Marchers.


June 5, 1951 January 1, 2017 Deborah (Brit) J. Kirtland passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2017. Brit was born on Long Island and moved to San Diego with her parents when she was 16 years old. She graduated from the University of Maryland with a master’s degree in Business and Education and enjoyed a successful career in marketing. Brit was retired and had lived in La Jolla for many years. She had a passion for tennis and bridge and was a member of the Cove Bridge Club, the Social Service League and gave generously of her time and resources. Also, she was often seen strolling around the village with her yorkie “Russe,” and meeting up with her village friends and pups for tea Brit touched many lives with her kind, caring and gentle way. His more then 30 years battle with muscular dystrophy peacefully ended February 7, with his mother and god-daughter at his side. Born and raised in San Diego Phil was a proud lifetime resident of North Park. Tony was born in Des Moines, Iowa on March 23, 1953. He graduated from Chula Vista High School. He married Kathy Yamada in 1975 and they had two sons.
