Thomas is also an event that is ideal for that other part of the Rotary family to help with - our Rotary friends - and we are most grateful to all those who turned out. Some helped in their own villages where local knowledge was very useful.

In Uffington we encountered a young lady who proffered a five pound note if Santa would sweep her off her feet. He promptly obliged and earned the five pounds. She was impressed, so was Santa (not sure about the back). It was also in Uffington that I was called over to cheer up a lady's husband. I enquired why he needed cheering up, he just blamed Christmas.

Then there are our drivers, a cheery lot, all accomplished in their driving skills. Thomas is not the easiest of trailers to reverse: bright LED lights preventing one from seeing past the front buffer, loud music of the festive CD preventing the hearing of any directions and the disregard which residents in small cul-de-sacs have for Thomas. Apologies for the odd tyre mark on the odd lawn and; well done!

So it’s over for another year: I think we all enjoyed it (perhaps not the ones out on the wet Saturday evening in Faringdon or that windy Friday evening). We've added to our charity coffers: let’s now find something to spend it on.

Santa Glyn
