RECAP IN PHOTOS The 23 rd North American School Bus EXPO in Reno drew 700 at-

tendees and nearly another 100 participants in technical training offered during the conference by Blue Bird. Big numbers for the final year at the Grand Sierra Resort, as STN signed a three-year deal with the nearby Peppermill Resort through 2019. In addition to preparing for an earlier start next year, July 8-12,

attendees feasted on five dozen workshops and sessions, highlighted by keynote addresses from Lt. Joe Kenda, the “Homicide Hunter” from Investigation Discovery’s hit detective series that started its sixth season last month. Kenda took time out from his busy schedule to regale attend- ees with stories not just from behind the scenes of production but more importantly from his eight years post retirement as a special needs school bus driver. Blue Bird along with Hendrickson and ROUSH CleanTech sponsored

Jim “The Rookie” Morris as the headliner, as the former Major League Baseball pitcher talked about being a dream maker for oneself as well as others. Meanwhile, Dan Sperry provided an impassioned plea to student transporters to take a closer look at training and technology to address illegal passing incidents. STN and Q’Straint selected Pete Meslin, director of transportation at

Newport-Mesa Unified School District in Southern California, as the recip- ient of the 10th

Annual Peter Grandolfo Memorial Award of Excellence for

his passion for special education transportation, especially. This year’s STN EXPO also featured for the first time a Ride & Drive

event with school bus OEMs and technology providers showcasing their latest alternative and traditional fuel models as well as the latest GPS hardware and software. STN and the Propane Education & Research Council also recognized three school districts—East Sac County Com- munity School District in Iowa, Houston ISD and Mobile County Public Schools in Alabama—with “Leadership with Propane Autogas Awards.” Browse photos from Reno, including the STN EXPO Trade Show on July 26, as well as sessions and networking events.
