carcinogens and can be harmful. TanOrganic, being 100% natural and organic, is one of the best brands I’ve used over the years as it’s safe and effective.”

Insurance and training For a topic that’s so heavily controversial, it’s a good idea to ensure you’re properly protected. Ask your client for written consent from their doctor or consultant before you complete any treatment, and keep hold of any records, along with a back-up in case these get lost.

You should also speak to your insurance provider to clarify any questions you may have; they will be able to explain their guidelines and whether or not you’re insured to treat such clients.

to use and how to use them to make it completely safe, as some ingredients can cause irritation and harm to the skin.

Hennessy Hair & Beauty Supplies suggest: “A very light and relaxing massage or a calming, sensitive type facial would be suitable [for clients]. Chemo builds up in the hands and feet, causing discomfort, itching and burning, but light touch can help these symptoms. [Offering a] manicure with very light massage is a nice treatment for a client.”

For clients who may be experiencing loss of eyelashes, Dreamweave’s Treatment Lash Construct is ideal. The peptide- based serum thickens the roots and stems of the lashes, whilst repairing damaged follicles.

The product can be applied with a wand similar to a mascara brush, which makes it a suitable retail product that’s easy for your client to use at home.

You may also wish to retail make-up products that won’t irritate your clients’ skin. At Virginie Claire and V.Claire Products, all of their skin care and make- up is natural, organic and certified BIO. “We can guarantee purity, especially at a point in your clients’ life when they really are becoming conscious of toxins in their environment,” they say. “We specialise in

facials and organic make-up and can continue these treatments alongside those for cancer.”

During cancer treatments, your clients’ skin may begin to change; not only will they be experiencing dryness and dehydration, but it may begin to grow dull and pale in colour. Organic make-up will help to give them that extra confidence boost, or likewise, they could try a tanning product to bring some colour to their skin.

Emma Hannigan, Brand Ambassador for TanOrganic, has beaten cancer an astonishing nine times – including four times in one year – and feels passionately about the TanOrganic products and their brand mantra.

“Going through cancer treatment can leave you feeling utterly horrific. Not only do you suffer the internal physical effects of these aggressive treatments, but also external physical side effects such as hair loss and a rather unattractive blue tinge to the skin,” says Emma.

“Making yourself feel attractive can be difficult, but can also make you feel better in yourself. That’s why I love TanOrganic. When going through treatment, you are limited to what beauty products you can use as many contain

Specific training in treating cancer patients will benefit you hugely. Christine Clinton’s ‘Cancer Care’ concept focusses on teaching beauty professionals safe and effective touch therapies for clients affected by the side effects of Chemotherapy and Radiation; for example, holistic therapies tailored at both men and women.

“During the training, the therapists learn how to adjust positions and pressure, being mindful of the major risk factors such as lymphedema, easy bruising, compromised breathing and medical devices. Additionally, therapists learn how to assess the clients’ skin which can become very fragile during cancer treatment,” says Christine.

Ensuring you know your patients’ cancer history means you’ll be able to provide a service that’s tailor-made to suit them and their illness.

With statistics suggesting a large number of our population will experience cancer at some point in their lives, this highlights exactly how important it is for beauty professionals to banish their fear and misinformation, so that when a cancer patient walks into their salon, they can be met with confidence and understanding and leave feeling refreshed and reconnected.
