Greeks awarded laurel crowns to poets, musicians, and winners of athletic competitions such as the Olympic Games. Crowns of laurel leaves were awarded for excellence or courage in the Greco-Roman world. They were worn while making offerings, and at feasts held to honour deities. Laurel crowns were also symbols of excellence and victory. This custom survives in expressions such as nobel laureate, poet laureate, etc.
