Betty Ogden in San Diego, where he grew up in North Park. He enjoyed fishing, skeet shooting and archery in surrounding areas. After graduating from San Diego High School, he joined the Army, serving in Viet Nam. He wasa member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 230, retiring in 2010 to pursue other interests and enjoy time with friends and family. Surviving are his mother Betty C. James J. Durrant, 73, of Jacumba Hot Springs, CA, passed away on Friday, December 16, 2016 in his home after suffering a heart attack. He was born in Columbus, Kansas on October 1, 1943 to Frances A. (Abbott) and Donald M. Durrant, both of whom precede him in death. James was a loving son, brother, father, uncle, friend and above all, a blessed child of God. He is survived by two sisters, Donna J. McElvain and Sharon L. Jackson, three daughters, Kimberly A. Durrant, Suzette L. Votto, and Tracie L. Terry and the woman he loved dearly, Mary Hughes. James had nine grandchildren, LeeAnn Alvarez, Jacob Breschi, John Breschi Jr., Kristopher Breschi, Chad LaCuesta, Kyle LaCuesta, Charlayne Stack, Andrew Votto and Victoria Votto and five great grandchildren, JaLissa Alvarez, Frank Alvarez Jr., Anthony Alvarez, Delilah Riley and Jaisan Powers. Joe was born in San Diego, CA. on September 12, 1949 to Lonnie & Nellie (Cordova) Spry. He was the 6th of 9 children and the first boy. He graduated from Crawford High School in 1967. Joe was proud to serve his country with the U.S. Army from 1968-1971 earning a Purple Heart in the Vietnam War. He worked for Western Electric & Kyocera before becoming a Letter Carrier for the Post Office in 1977. His career lasted 28 yrs. at the Pt. Loma Station. He is survived by his wife Marcia; of Kennewick, WA; son Joseph Spry and daughter- in-law Mariana Oswalt-Spry of Kennewick, WA; son Bryan Spry of Pasco, WA. and grandson’s Jalen & Jaxon Spry of Kennewick, WA.

Found true calling as track & cross-country coach for Mission Bay (2001-2008) and La Jolla (2008-2015) High Schools. Completed 159 triathlons (an Age Group World Record & National Title). Unknown December 7, 2016 Dr Diane Heaton Schmitt, 60, passed away on Dec. 7, 2016 at her home in Coronado. Born and raised in Princeton, Il, Diane had spent the last two decades of her life living in Southern California. Diane had numerous academic accomplishments, holding a BES in Educational and Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri, an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary, an MEd in Counseling Psychology and Guidance from Point Loma Nazarene University, and a DMin in Pastoral Care and Counseling from Claremont School of Theology. Throughout her career, she worked primarily as a Marriage and Family Therapist and spiritual care provider, in various positions at nonprofit organizations and in private practice. Her passion for her work and her great skill in helping others will be remembered by her colleagues and family alike. Mel Haber, owner of Melvyn’s Celebrity Restaurant and the Ingleside Inn of Palm Springs for 43 years died on Oct. 25, one day after his 80th birthday. Mel was one of the most iconic figures ever; just say the single word “Mel” and people from the Coachella Valley young and old immediately knew who you were talking about. Mel was on “60 Minutes,” “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” and “The Phil Donahue Show.” He appeared in hundreds of newspapers, magazines, radio shows and other television shows. A great ambassador for the City of Palm Springs, he has a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars and was known as Mr. Palm Springs. Mel also loved Coronado. May 29, 1947 November 13, 2016 Sherrell Lee Beecher, 69, passed away on November 13, 2016, after a lengthy illness. Born May 29, 1947, in Battle Creek, MI, to Robert and Virginia Mitchell, she attended Wooster High School in Reno, Nevada, and graduated from UC Davis with a teaching degree. Sherry taught high school English and history in Northern California before earning a registered nursing degree from Grossmont College in San Diego, where she practiced for more than 20 years at Kaiser Permanente. A fashionista beyond compare and the most loyal of friends, Sherry was known for her extraordinary wit, love of cats, hats, family and friends. As smart as she was beautiful, Sherry loved books and was passionate about world history.
