Bruno Mars’s immersion into the culture
emulated By Mary Ford
Bruno Mars embraces a lavish lifestyle on his newest release, 24K Magic. The album, with sounds from ’70s funk to ’90s hip-hop, contains synthesizers, sensuality, and sexism. Even when the tempo drops, this album retains its upbeat sound. Starting out with the funky single “24K Magic,” the album retains its spontaneously silly attitude toward love and luxury throughout ballads and bangers. Mars, possessing talent

Music Reviews from Our Readers The Church of
Damien Jurado By Brett Uddenberg
Dance-pop artist’s 24K Magic is catchy but cliché
sexual persuasion or luxury items, Mars comes off as a shallow, misogynistic player. Maybe that was his design, a full immersion into the culture emulated.
After being accused of plagiarism for the “Uptown Funk” single, this borrowing and sam- pling of older sounds is an interesting move for Mars. The spontaneity, finesse, and frivolous- ness is in keeping with older chart-toppers such as “Treasure” and “Locked Out of Heaven,” and this sound should not come as a surprise from a man who began as an Elvis/Michael Jack- son impersonator. Overall, 24K Magic is a fun album with chart- topping potential, but it doesn’t aspire for anything deeper.
A couple hundred people gathered, sitting on the floor of a North Park church to listen to a solo acoustic performance from Seattle’s Damien Jurado. Though not without a cult follow- ing, the half-full Irenic spoke to the under- appreciated nature of the singer-songwriter, who consistently chan- nels his psychic pain into profound, heavy, gorgeously arranged records. Possessing a dynamic voice fine tuned to the point of being an instrument in of itself, Jurado controlled a moder-
ately lit stage with nothing more than vocals and a guitar, and he didn’t need to rise from his seat to establish his presence. “It all makes sense to me...
“I’m not here to give a TED Talk or sermon, I promise you.”
but the narrative might not make sense to you,” Jurado relayed mid-set to explain the scatter- shot mix-tape nature of his song selection from the conceptual, Richard Swift–produced trilogy of albums he released between 2010 and 2014. Mythical storytelling with surreal imagery and religious overtones unfolded over the course of a 90-minute performance.
Jurado said he hoped his songs could provide some healing for those who need it “and if you don’t need
it...lucky you.”
