SEE BIRDS OF PREY At any given time, Skyhunters is responsible for more than 20 non- releasable raptors, including various hawk and owl species, and they work with as many as 300 rehabbed raptors every year. The facilities at Skyhunters include a 70-foot flight cage that all of the flighted birds use for conditioning. At this event you can see some of the birds up close. Presentation by program director Nancy Conney, who says she also has a personal collection of col- orful and noisy parrots, cockatoos, and macaws at home. $5.

SHELLFISH FOR THE CELESTIAL EMPIRE Join the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum for a lecture by author Todd Braje. His new book sheds light on a group of enterprising Chinese immi- grants who recognized the resources along the California coast and realized the fortune to be made in fishing, pro- cessing, and exporting the abundant intertidal black abalone of Southern and Baja California. Dr. Braje is an associate professor of anthropol- ogy at San Diego State University. His research centers on the archaeology of maritime societ- ies. $5.
