became a professor of English at Princeton between 1899 and 1923. Woodrow Wilson had been a fellow classmate and when Wilson became President, Van Dyke was appointed Minis- ter to the Netherlands and Lux- embourg in 1913. Van Dyke’s book about what happened dur- ing that time is called “Pro Pa- tria” and it reveals how skillfully he diplomatically organized the relief of Americans in Europe during WWI. Helen Keller wrote about valu-
ing her friendship with van Dyke. He published “Music and Other Poems” in 1904. Most widely known may be “Time Is” –“Time is/Too slow for those who Wait,/ Too swiſt for those who Fear,/ Too long for those who Grieve,/ Too short for those who Rejoice,/ But for those who Love,/Time is Eternity.” Other van Dyke writings I en-
joy are “Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love,
to work, to play, and to look up at the stars.” And, “Some are so afraid to die that they never be- gin to live.” Te best is: “Tese are the things I prize/And hold of dearest worth:/Light of the sapphire skies,/Peace of the si- lent hills,/Shelter of the forest,/ Comfort of the grass,/Music of the birds,/Murmur of little rills,/ Shadows of clouds that swiſtly pass,/And
aſter showers, the
smell of flowers,/And of the good brown earth--/And best of all, along the way, friendship and mirth.” --Much to reflect upon when thinking of a new year. Another story of immense
charitable love is Oscar Wilde’s “Te Happy Prince and Other Stories” which were first pub- lished in May, 1888. A swallow is leſt behind when his flock flies off to Egypt to survive the win- ter there. He huddles at the base of a jewel-bedecked statue of the late, young “Happy Prince.” Tat young prince did not realize how
his people were suffering and very poor. He asks the swallow to deliver a ruby from his sword hilt to help a desperate family. Next he asks the swallow to bring the sapphires from his eyes to help more who were suffering. Ten the swallow is told to bring the gold leaf covering the rest of the statue to more of the poor. Harsh winter finds the Prince bare of all his former splendor. His lead heart is broken when
the swallow dies for staying to help with unselfish deeds. Te city finds the statue ugly now and it is finally torn down to burn in a furnace. But, the broken heart and swallow are found by and carried to heavenly paradise by an angel who sees they are the most precious things in that city. Both Van Dyke and Wilde un- derstood that it is only love that makes the world a better place. Twelſth Night annually marks the end of the holiday festivities of winter. Old European cus-

Shakespeare’s eponymous play is especially wonderful in the 1996 film directed by Trevor Nunn with a great cast including Imogen Stubbs, Helena Bonham Carter, Toby Stephens, Ben King- sley and more.
