New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile

By Dr. Yolanda Mangrum, DDS • drmangrum@petalumadental.com

Petaluma, CA. ~ It’s that time of the year to refl ect on the past 365 days and think about what the New Year has in store for us.

Health

is often at the top of the list of new year’s resolutions for many people. We all know that physical health and healthy eating are an important part of living a healthy life, but have you thought about your oral health? Why not add some New Year reso- lutions for your teeth into the mix?

Here are some key elements for you to consider in setting your ‘oral health’ resolution.

1. Buy a new quality tooth- brush…and use it!

Think about investing in a good rechargeable toothbrush. Oral B makes a great, affordable spin brush that performs beautifully! Commit to using the two-minute brushing timer twice a day and you will notice signifi cantly more plaque removal than a manual brush!

2. Floss every day! Even the best toothbrush can’t re-

move bacteria and plaque from between your teeth. If you are feel- ing overwhelmed by the thought of fl ossing daily, think about starting out slowly, say…2-3 times per week. You can gradually increase your fl ossing frequen- cy until you are up to once a day.

3. Aviod using tobacco products! Tobacco use can cause all kinds of oral health problems, including: bad

teeth,

breath, gum

tooth loss, and oral cancer.

4. Visit your Dentist! Your dentist knows best when it comes to keeping your mouth healthy. Visiting your dentist ev- ery three to six months is the best way to ensure a clean bill of dental health.

5. Smile more in 2016! It has been scientifi cally prov-

en that a simple smile can boost your mood, relieve stress, & even strengthen your immune systems. You owe a lot to those teeth and gums of yours. Do them a favor this New Year by practicing excel- lent dental health habits and smile big in 2017!

UPBEAT TIMES, INC. • January 2017 • 15 Upbeat Fun! We’re Looking for the Next Mr. Healdsburg! By Carol (Kiki) Noack • carolnoack@comcast.net

Healdsburg, CA. ~ It’s that time of year again—The 2017 Mr. Healdsburg Pageant is coming to town and men ages 21-121 are encouraged to join the fun! Now in its 14th year, the Mr. Healdsburg pageant in- cludes beachwear, formalwear, talent, and interview contests— but don’t let that give you cold feet! Real skills seem to weigh little in determining the winner, and there are so many reasons to become a Mr. Healdsburg contestant. Past volunteers have had a blast in this silly,

zany pageant, making lifelong friends and connections. Jim Morris had an amazing

time competing in the pageant, even though he had plenty of reservations going into it. “I had never sung, danced, or per- formed on stage,” Jim confi d- ed. “That petrifi ed me. I drank a lot behind stage. I killed it.” “It is so much fun to do some- thing outside of your comfort zone, “ says Jim. “The commu- nity is so supportive.” Tejpal Sekhon, who won the title in 2011, was new in town

and “skeptical at fi rst” when he thought about competing. But participating in Mr. Healds- burg wound up becoming his introduction into the commu- nity. “All of it was great,” said Tej. “I owe all of my positive experiences in Healdsburg, almost all of my wonderful friendships in Healdsburg, to the Raven, because they pro- vided me a platform to intro- duce myself to our community. “ “During the time leading up to the pageant, getting to meet
