JUNIPER BARN, RENDHAM
There can’t be too many more quintessentially rural Suffolk villages than rend- ham. Small winding roads weave through the village and pass an historic church, the village pub and a 300 year old
Suffolk barn. The church and pub have
been much loved and well used over the years but in recent times the Suffolk barn has been derelict. That is until Geoffrey and Katie Boult
moved into the village. The husband and wife team moved to the area from Yorkshire as Geoffrey has fond memories of childhood holidays to Suf- folk and it has always been his ambition to move to the area. Behind the barn you will
find their beautiful house and bed & breakfast business. But part of the attraction of this location was the project of the barn itself. Katie explains that initially they had thought of making it a holiday let but after much deliberation the couple saw a gap in the market for a village shop. For anyone living in one of the surround- ing villages the nearest shop for a pint of milk or loaf of bread would have been Sax- mundham or Framlingham – that is a long way to go for a loaf of bread. The idea evolved and it

seemed a natural progression to include a café, after all this is a big barn. So, the work began. The barn required a complete renovation and the end results are stunning. The original roof is intact and any- thing that needed replacing has been done so sympatheti- cally and in keeping. Upon entering the barn you
will see the shop to the left and the lovely open plan café to the right. There is plenty of seat- ing and best of all, a huge wood burner offering a warm- ing glow that complements the underfloor heating. Juniper Barn is walker, cyclist and dog friendly so why not pop in after a winter walk and warm up with a delicious freshly ground coffee, blended tea or Italian hot chocolate by the fire? For those looking to fuel up
then there is a delicious menu serving breakfast, lunch, cakes, snacks, soups and more. The food offering is honest, delicious, a little bit different and uses locally sourced pro- duce. Juniper Barn is the perfect
place to meet with friends, or take advantage of the free wifi to catch up on emails. Bring in a paper or pick up a book from the charity bookshelf and just take some time out in this tran- quil yet bustling setting. The beauty of such an old barn is being large and open plan sound and noise gets absorbed so families and friends can sit and chat without having to shout across the table at one another. During the warmer
spring and summer months there is a lovely enclosed out- side seating space to take advantage of the Suffolk sun- shine! having enjoyed some food
and drink take a wander to the other end of the barn and pick up whatever it is that you need for your larder at home. Of course, this will not compete with a supermarket but Geof- frey and Katie are not trying to. But what they are trying to do is make sure that if you really need something then they will have it – or a suitable substitute. There are fridges and freezers for chilled and frozen items, a selection of beer and wine, cleaning and household items and even chocolates and sweets! There is plenty of parking on
site and the barn is completely wheelchair friendly and has baby changing facilities too. So, the next time you have run out of eggs or milk you know where to go. For any further details please call 01728 663773, visit www.juniper-
