News from Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection

DECEMBER will be a busy month for the Fram and Sax CP fund raising team. From December 1st to December 7th you will find us at the iChame- leon Pop-Up Shop in the High Street, Halesworth and on Sun- day 4th December we will have our stall (outside Boots) at the Woodbridge Christmas Fair. The last of this year’s Cat Hom- ing Events will be at the Market Hall, Saxmundham on Saturday 10th December; your chance to meet your new best feline friend. All of these events are ideal opportunities to stock-up on CP cards, Calendars and Christmas gifts and, of course, support the cats and the work we do. See full details on our website. The end of the year is the time

to reflect on the eventful past 12 months. Fund raising has been hectic; the start of the year being very damp and windy we had a few events which did not go quite as planned; one gazebo wrecked by the wind and one a near wash-out with the rain. None of this dampened the spir- its of the team and the volunteers soldiered on tirelessly, still man- aging to smile and talk ‘cats’ with our ever-loyal supporters. Eventually the sun did shine but

whatever the weather there was much to enjoy at some of the best events in the area: Heve- ningham, the Suffolk Show, Westleton Barrel Fair, Woo- bridge Regatta to name but a few. Fostering, trapping, rescuing

and neutering have been relent- less. We took in abandoned cats, pregnant cats, un-neutered cats, sick cats and a whole host of kit- tens. At one point there were over forty kittens in our foster homes and cabins. Work with ferals has not diminished and our neutering campaign con- tinues. New volunteers were recruit-

ed during 2016 and we always need more. Whether you can spare a few hours to help on our stalls or think you would like to take felines into your home as a short-term foster carer, we would love to hear from you. We are particularly hoping to recruit someone who has a small van (or large car) who can trans- port goods to and from our events, particularly in the Wood- bridge area. Do get in touch if you can help in any way. We would like to say ‘thank

you’ to; all those who have adopted cats and kittens this

FRAMLINGHAM ST JOHN

FRAMLINGHAM Badger Sett. This term the Badgers, who are all aged seven to 10 years old, have been working towards their Com- municate and First Aid Badger – just two of 15 subjects they can choose as part of the Super Bad- ger Award. This has included learning sign language, under- standing how our eyes work, and learning about Braille. We also visited the Framlingham Library and send our very grateful thanks to Lesley Clouting for arranging this and making our visit so inter- esting. The Badgers were able to have a guided tour of the building, look at some of the 14,000 books and learn about all the many and varied services our library offers. At our recent awards evening,

year; all those who so generous- ly donated money and bought goods; new members who joined the branch and all the wonderful supporters and vol- unteers without whom we can- not help the cats in the way we do.

Badgers were enrolled and received their various certificates. Parents and friends were then entertained by the Badgers with their signing skills. Virgin Money London Mara-

thon 2017. After a very busy summer, St John Ambulance is appealing for members of the public to sign up and run in next year’s Virgin Money London Marathon on behalf of the charity. We have already had several peo- ple around the country sign up and there are still places on the team. The charity hopes that any- one who won a place in the ballot,

without choosing a charity to sup- port, will now put their best foot forward to fundraise for St John Ambulance whose volunteers help thousands finish the race each year. All runners fundraising for St John Ambulance are sup- ported by a dedicated marathon co-ordinator in the months lead- ing up to the event. They receive an SJA running vest, and advice on nutrition and fundraising as they prepare for the big day. On race day runners are boosted by an official St John Ambulance cheering point and are VIP guests at a special post-race reception. Treats available include a much needed massage! Contact events@sja.org.uk or 0207 324 4168 for more information about running for us. First aid cover at public events.

The adult volunteers have been providing first aid cover at public events, in addition to training and attending courses. All our mem- bers are volunteers who kindly give up their time to attend these public duties. When large crowds gather for public events there needs to be first aid cover to ensure the safety and well-being of those attending. Our volunteers are trained in advanced first aid and life saving skills and attend many events each year. In the event of an accident or illness

occurring, our volunteers’ skills are vital in preventing further harm and saving lives. They pro- vide essential support until the emergency services arrive. We’d like to remind organisers of events that the more notice you can give, the more likely we may be able to provide the necessary first aid cover. At least six weeks’ notice is preferred. For further details call 01473 241500. Please note, with an increasing number of requests, it may not always be possible to provide the first aid cover as requested. Volunteering with St John

Ambulance: For your New Year’s resolution, why not think about joining St John Ambulance? You can get involved in a variety of rewarding roles, from fundraisers to administrators, and youth lead- ers to first aiders. If you would like more details about the varied work of St John Ambulance and how you could be a part of it, please do contact us on 01728 621674, fax 01728 621675 or look online at www.sja.org.uk Framlingham St John would

like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year and thank you for your kind sup- port during 2016.
