ULSTER CHEMISTS’ ASSOCIATION IN FOCUS
President's welcome m
inister O’Neill has published her Vision for health & wellbeing 2026 and has
firmly put the emphasis on public health, primary care, prevention and integrated health solutions. the development of the role of practice- based pharmacists (PBPs) was also affirmed, even though the first wave are just taking up post.
this will be a job that evolves as time goes by and I am sure that pharmacists contemplating this role will be delighted to know that Uca has just launched its indemnity insurance package that meets all the requirements of the job.
the Uca has over 100 years’ experience serving community pharmacy and I know this experience
patient care. If nothing else, katie mckittrick’s Prescription Payment Support talks are valuable enough to be worth attendance!
will be welcomed by practice-based pharmacists as their job takes shape.
Our Uca local meetings go from strength to strength, with good turnouts in Newry and Portadown. the cPd delivered is very useful in making up those hours! the chance to meet and talk to your colleagues in invaluable for those in community pharmacy as we enter a brave new world of PBPs and the advent of service-based community pharmacy.
these meetings are open to all pharmacists working in primary care and it would be great to see pharmacists working in gP practices coming along too as a way of introduction to your colleagues in community. let’s see how we can work together to achieve positive
Security in community pharmacy is also in the news! we are increasingly seen as a soft target with our accessibility on the high street. without adequate funding, we will see this continue to grow as an issue. Pharmacies are already struggling to meet increased demands on their staff and premises.
let us hope that, with the health minister’s acknowledgement of the work that community pharmacy does and can do, this will translate into a pharmacy contract fit for the future.
the savage cuts being imposed in England show how government can talk about pharmacy delivering health care and alleviate pressure on gP surgeries, yet, in reality, cut funding, making this an impossible dream or a

very crude method of culling pharmacies which are at the heart of their communities.
the minister wants to implement her Vision through a process of engagement, and Uca, along with other pharmacy representative bodies, will work hard to ensure that minister O’Neill understands how community pharmacy can play a full role in transforming our health service for the 21st century.
