News Bus card plan

BUS users across the county can now buy their own Oyster-style travel card. But the pay-as-you-go Smartcard

– a joint initiative between Kent County Council andMedway Coun- cil – has already attracted criticism from passengers for failing to in- clude one of the country’s main serv- ice providers, Arriva. The card can be topped up online,

at libraries or on the bus, with an auto top-up option. While the card is accepted by op- eratorsNu-Venture,Autocar, Chalk- well,ASD, County Connect, Farleigh and Go-Coach, Arriva says it has its own scheme on trial. Arriva spokesman Simon Baxter

said: “We simply can’t afford to make the investment twice.”

Curfew set

stone, was sentenced at Mid Kent Magistrates Court to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months and observe an eight-week curfew, keeping her at home from 9.30pm to 5am daily. She must also pay £200 compensation.

George, 15, has top golf title in his sights

MAIDSTONE school student George Young is striking the bal- ance between studies and secur- ing a place in the world of golf. The Maplesden Noakes Year 11

pupil confesses to being completely self-taught. Nevertheless, the 15- year-old won the Kent Schools' Golf Tournament this year and rep- resented Kent in the English Schools’ Tournament in May, where he came ninth from a field of 51 – a great result for a teenager taking part in his first national tour- nament. George, pictured, who has been playing golf for three years is a reg- ular atWest Malling Golf Club and has a handicap of one, in spite of never having had a professional golf lesson. With the tireless support of his family, he manages to play at least twice a week and at weekends. George also gets a support from his school, in particular from PE teacher Stephen Chapman, who said: “George is a fantastically tal- ented young golfer who seems to

won both the U16 and U18 Kent Championship titles and as the youngest player came a credible 18th out of 28 in the England Golf’s Champion of Champions tourna- ment in September. His headteacher, Richard Owen,

said: “George is a talented all- round sportsman and clearly excels at golf. His commitment and dedi- cation have enabled him to make rapid progress in this sport and the school is always very proud of his achievements.” And as for George? He says: “In

make playing effortless. “At the Kent School’s tournament

his driving was straight and long, his short game was incredible (es- pecially the eagle putt on the sixth hole) and this, together with his consistently accurate putting, won him the tournament.” George has been playing for Kent

for two years and for the South East of England for a year. This year, he

the next two years my goal is to earn an England Cap and win a na- tional event. My long term goal is to get a scholarship to attend a uni- versity in the US to develop my golf even further. I know it won’t be easy to juggle both golf and my studies at Maplesden Noakes but I am confident that, with my focus and determination, I will achieve good GCSE grades, stay on to sixth form and do well in my A Levels. I’m prepared to do extra to get the exam results I need.”
