News Village award blooming great!
GREEN-fingered villagers have won a top award for their gorgeous gardens and perfect planters just a few months after launching Mar- den in Bloom. The group formed in January with
the aim of enhancing the community and entered this year’s South and South East in Bloom competition. The parishioners’ displays, skills
and hard work paid off when the judges gave them a silver award. Chairman and parish council member Anne Boswell, said: “Not bad for novices!” The judges were especially im- pressed with the grounds of Rook- ery Court, Highwood Green’s hanging baskets and the colourful displays in the High Street. One member, Robert Thompson,
madefive planters to resemble apple crates which were stencilled with Marden in Bloom by Jean Stratton. These were filled with red, white and blue flowers to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. The group also organised a Best
Floral Display competition, judged by members of Cranbrook in Bloom. Cllr Boswell said: “Many resi-
dents, businesses and community groups made a great effort to enter and it certainly has encouraged more horticultural practice in the

parish. Many residents who did not enter the competition also made a huge effort and the villagewas look- ing lovely.” Plans for fundraising are under-
way for a number of projects, in- cluding planting 2,000 crocuses in support of a national charity cam- paign which will provide a carpet of colour next spring. It will also be working with local businesses, chil- dren, Scout groups and Brownies and encouraging residents to grow more bee-, butterfly- and bat- friendly
