German truck driver jailed

A FOREIGN lorry driver has been sentenced to 14 months in prison after admitting causing a serious injury by dangerous driv- ing.

Enreco Ruhm (36), of Nurem-

burg, Germany, was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court. In addition to the prison sen-

tence, hewas banned from driving for 31 months and will have to take an extended retest should he require his licence back. The charge related to an incident

that occurred on the A229 Staple- hurst Road, Marden, just prior to the junction of Summerhill Road on Tuesday, December 22, 2015. Ruhm was driving red DAF XF

truck when it was involved in a head-on collision with a Land Rover Discovery. The driver of the Land Rover

was trapped in the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was cut free from the 4x4 and was taken to Kings Hospital in Lon- don. He had to undergo extensive

treatment for multiple injuries, in- cluding a hip replacement and fractured back which will affect him for the rest of his life. An investigation by officers

from the Serious Collision Unit concluded that Ruhm had been driving his lorry on the wrong side of the road prior to the incident. During an interview, he admit-

ted he was driving on the wrong side of the carriageway. Detective Constable Mark Robinson, who investigated the collision, said: “The victim sus- tained life- changing injuries in the collision, and, despite Ruhm showing remorse and admitting the offence at the earliest opportu- nity, there must be consequences to such lapses in concentration. “A vehicle driven carelessly is a dangerous weapon; those short moments where a motorist’s mind drifts can be the difference be- tween life or death. “I cannot stress enough the im- portance of keeping focused and alert when behind the wheel.”
