eated in the Royal Box at Smith’s Lawn, HRH The Prince of Wales watched a strong England team win the Hurlingham Polo Association’s (HPA) Royal Salute Coronation Cup
– the UK’s most prestigious international polo match and without doubt one of the sport’s most striking trophies. Playing against a South American team, featuring professional and amateur players from Argentina, Chile and Brazil, the 27-goal England team dominated the six chukkas to win the match 10-6. Brigadier John Wright, the then Chairman of the HPA said: “This year’s Royal Salute Coronation Cup showcased international polo at its best. Both teams produced some superb sport and it was marvellous to hear the crowds cheering them on. England’s success is testament to the hard work and commitment that England captain James Beim and his team have brought to this game and I would like to thank everyone who has supported them, especially their fellow players who generously loaned ponies. In addition, South America put up a great fight and entertained us for six glorious chukkas.”
