What is your background in polo? I grew up playing at an army club, Tidworth in Wiltshire. I was lucky enough at the age of 18 to get a scholarship to Argentina. Since then I have travelled around the world playing polo. In fact I have been playing polo for more than 25 years. In that quarter century I have been fortunate enough to play professionally for many teams including Urs and Guy Schwarzenbach’s renowned Black Bears squad. These days though my winters are spent commentating on the high-goal polo circuit. I’m currently in the Dominican Republic working with a new series of 22- and 26-goal tournaments called Polo Challenge 2016. This has been really exciting and it is great to help introduce this incredible sport into new regions and to new audiences.
What is the biggest tournament you have won? This would have to be either the Swiss Open in Geneva or the Gold Cup in Gstaad. They were both were 18-goal tournaments.
Who is the most famous person you have taught to play? Hmmm… HRH Princess Beatrice, Selena Gomez, David Hasselhoff, Matt Dawson… and couple of lessons to HH Sheikha Maitha Al Makoum [patron of the high-goal UAE team] over a decade ago!
What do you think are three most important things when learning to play? Persistence, confidence and a good horse!
