Chummy’s van allowed to stay

CHUMMY’S seafood stall will be allowed to continue trading in an Aylesford car park, despite a stink kicked up by nearby residents. The mobile fish bar, which oper-

ates three days aweek in front of the Holtwood Farm Shop in London Road, has been granted permission to remain permanently at the site after a planning battle lasting more than two years. Complaints from neighbours flowed in to Tonbridge and Malling Coun- cil after the busi- ness started in 2013

without formal approval. When owner Colin Madden (pic-

tured) sought retrospective plan- ning permission a year later, the authority received letters from neighbours, particularly in Russett Close and The Bounds, concerned about smells and noise. One resi- dent complained of seagulls aswell as “loud conversation and choice language”. However, more than 170 people signed a petition and letters sup-

porting the fish shop and the bor- ough council decided to give the stall a trial run, with strict condi- tions, and to monitor the situation. Mr Madden, who also has a fish

bar in Folkestone, said he was de- lighted that common sense had pre- vailed. The borough council’s planning committee has agreed to grant full permission for the van. Members heard there had been only one com- plaint about noise and another of service outside the approved hours, but council investigators found that no breaches had taken place. Aylesford Parish Council raised a

strong objection, saying: “We are still aware of residents’ complaints about smell and noise.” A borough council planning offi-

cer reported: “I appreciate that some residents continue to object to the presence of the fish van, primarily on grounds of noise and parking. However, given that it has now been operating for some time, with no complaints having been raised to the council, it would not be reason- able to withhold a permanent per- mission on such grounds now.”
