News Birds killed at
village pond APARISHcouncil chairman has ap- pealed for information after wild birds were killed in a sickening at- tack at a village duck pond. CllrVianne Gibbons, of Loose, de- scribed the shocking devastation at Brooks Field pond, caused by “a group ofmendressed in camouflage outfits with dogs.” In the parish council newsletter,
Loose Views, she said that the men threw rocks and stones at the bul- rushes. “As the ducks and their chicks came out of the bulrushes, the menset their dogs on them, killing a vast amount. It appears there is pos- sibly only one mallard and one moorhen with chicks left.” She said: “I was appalled to hear
this news. The ducks have always been a lovely feature in Loose for which we are very lucky. For them to be killed is very shocking.” The millpond is looked after by volunteers after being taken over by the parish council in 2000. Cllr Gibbons asked for anyone
who saw what happened at about 8.30pm on Tuesday, July 12 to con- tact the police or the council “so that we can try to stop these inhumane people from doing this again.” Kent police said they had not yet identified anyone they would like to speak with.

Slimline fire engine is way forward for crew
MARDEN’S new fire engine was given a baptism of fire in a corn field blaze at Leeds involving 300 tonnes of straw. The new engine was one of two
called to the scene to stop the blaze spreading to neighbouring fields. It is one of 29 smaller appliances
thatwill be responding to 999 emer- gency calls across the county as part of Kent Fire and Rescue’s changing fleet. Weighing in at 12 tonnes – six tonnes lighter than the service’s other appliances – it is packed with specialist equipment, including a thermal imaging camera. Chris Colgan, from Kent Fire and Rescue, explained why Kent has opted for the new, slimline engines. He said: “A number of our fire en- gineswere reaching the end of their life. Traditionally, we’ve employed a ‘one size fits all’ model with the 18-tonne fire engines used for every type of incident, but technology and firefighting tactics have moved on.” Following an in-depth review into the types of incidents attended,

KFRS found it was using 40% of its equipment 80% of the time, pre- senting an opportunity to carry its equipment on a smaller fire engine to complement its larger vehicles. Mr Colgan said:“We are continu-
ally looking at how we tackle fires and other incidents to make surewe
take advantage of new technology.” As well as being lighter and nar-
rower, the appliances are more fuel efficient and £50,000 cheaper. Fire crews at Marden have received training for the appliance, which will be in service for at least 15 years.
