6 DRY STACK

A win-win for operators and owners

D

ry Stack is highly regarded as a cost-effective and hugely advantageous berthing option for

motorboats, offering a mutually beneficial solution for both marina operators and boat owners. To uncover all the advantages

that Dry Stack facilities have to offer, this article shines the spotlight on MDL Marinas, Europe’s leading marina operator and a pioneer of Dry Stack facilities in the UK. It takes a look at the group’s Dry Stack offering at one of its leading locations on the River

Hamble and the many benefits that Dry Stack can offer developers, operators and owners.

What is dry stack? Dry Stack berthing is a safe, secure and convenient way to store RIBs and motorboats (typically up to 12 metres although some systems can cater for larger vessels). It offers storage ashore in dedicated racks for boats when they are not in use, with craft usually stacked three to five boats high. The product differs from regular storage ashore as it has a complementary on-demand

launch and recovery service. Alex Beere, Head of MDL Marina

Consultancy, commented: “Dry Stack is often seen as ‘the best of both worlds’ as customers can access their boats and head out on the water whenever they like, but they do not incur the same level of maintenance costs as boats that are berthed in the water. For the marina developer or owner, it also allows marinas to increase their berth capacity or create berthing opportunities in a location where traditional on-water berthing wouldn’t be possible”.

The Dry Stack concept has been widely developed and used across the US for many years. As the marina industry has grown and matured across Europe and in other parts of the world, this concept has continued to grow.

Hamble Point Marina For sheer location alone, Hamble Point Marina is hard to beat. In a prime spot on the River Hamble, it is home to a superb 121-berth dry stack system for motorboats of up to 10 metres and enjoys fast and easy access to the world
