n Australasia and America, the concept of ‘sister cities’ – known as ‘friendship cities’ in China – has grown in popularity as a means of forging links between different cultures, as well as helping to promote trade


and tourism. In Japan, for example, these city partnerships are supported by the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations, which fulfils much the same role as its US counterpart, Sister Cities International. Two marinas in these nations have introduced this


idea to our industry with the formation of a unique bond between Shin Nishinomiya Yacht Harbor in Hyogo Prefecture and Swantown Marina & Boatyard in Olympia, the capital of Washington State. Around 100 people attended the original signing ceremony in Olympia on 18 August, 2013, including Toshizo Ido, Hyogo’s Governor, and Toshikazu Hayashi, President of Shin Nishinomiya Yacht Harbor. At that event, Ido expressed the hope that the agreement would encourage yacht-owners from both marinas to interact, adding that he thought the agreement could produce some unforeseen and unexpected results. August, Bruce Marshall, Swantown’s Harbor Director, was asked how it had worked out? His response was, “Just fine, both parties have benefitted from the cultural exchange and by interchanging staff between marinas, we have been able to learn from each other”. In fact, another Shin Nishinomiya employee is due to arrive at Swantown shortly. It is plain that the agreement has succeeded,


perhaps helped by the fact that Hyogo and Washington have enjoyed a ‘sister state’ relationship since October, 1963, but it is also apparent that the concept of ‘sister marinas’ has not been widely adopted. Perhaps now is the time to establish an international


dating agency where marinas in the economically dynamic and increasingly prosperous nations of the Asia-Pacific region can be matched to suitable partners in North America and Europe for their mutual benefit.
