cravings

> from heartburn, so try another option such as salt’n’vinegar crisps.

A craving for sweet stuff is one of the most popular in pregnancy and, while it can sometimes be an indicator of gestational diabetes, in most cases it’s simply down to the fact that most people love chocolate and sweets and what better time to spoil yourself than during pregnancy?

Ice Although it’s not actually a food per se, many pregnant women love to chew on ice. In addition to fulfilling a craving, ice does actually serve a practical purpose, since it can relieve inflammation of the mouth and tongue, which is a common symptom of anaemia at this time.

Chocolate/sweets If you’re currently halfway through a box of chocolates as you’re reading this, you’ll probably have a huge grin on your face! Tat’s because – as you well know - chocolates and sweets make us happy!

Spicy foods Spicy foods are another common craving among pregnant women. Not only are they particularly popular for their taste, it’s also thought that women turn to them because they make the body sweat, which, paradoxically, cools it down. In pregnancy, many women find it impossible to stay cool, so spicy food actually helps to cool them down!

Ice cream Another major favourite in the craving crazes.....this option may again be linked to simply indulging oneself ! If you want to stay on the healthy side of indulging, try opting for a low- fat vanilla frozen yogurt with fresh fruit.

Coffee During pregnancy, coffee is one of those products that’s generally referred to as ‘like Marmite’.

Tat’s because, while some coffee drinkers will be completely turned off by coffee during pregnancy, others will crave the caffeine beverage. If you’ve any concerns about how much coffee you’re drinking, speak to your GP.

Red meat Red meat is another favourite craving, probably because it’s full of protein and iron. For the healthy option, skip cuts such as rib-eye, which tend to be fattier, and go for sirloin cuts. Alternatively,

indulge your craving with lean

ground beef, which you can use to make burgers.

Ice cream and olives... yum!

Crazy combos We’ve all come across pregnant women who have indulged in creating crazy combinations of foods. From olives with ice cream to pickles and peanut butter... they’ve all been done. No one is exactly sure why some women crave these weird and wonderful combos, but some speculate

that it’s just the body’s way of ensuring that your baby receives a wide range of nutrients. So, if you’re

currently dipping a banana into a tub of tomato salsa, you

just go ahead and enjoy! „ 18MODERNMUM Summer 2016
