cravings

While no one is totally sure why pregnant women experience food cravings, it's estimated that between 50-90 per cent will.

Are you

certainly seem to be increasing. A study carried out in the Sixties, for example, found that only 30 per cent of pregnant women experienced bizarre food cravings, but by 2011, this figure had shot up to in excess of 75 per cent! Researchers believe that hormonal

changes and potential nutrient deficiencies can be behind many pregnancy cravings, but it's also clear that cultural differences and factors such as where you live also play a role. (One study which was published in the Tanzania Journal of Health Research, found that pregnant women in Tanzania craved mangos, which isn't a typical craving experienced by women in the Western World.) If you take a look online,

you'll also find that there are cravings which are a little more 'off the wall'. A quick internet Google will throw up women, who have developed a passion for, among other items: rice with brown sugar, barbecue sauce and butter; pickles on Oreo cookies; pickles in cream cheese and wrapped with pepperoni... the mind boggles.

So, before you find yourself looking

longingly - and lovingly! - at a lump of coal, or are just dying to take a bite out of a rubber glove, take a look at MM's guide to the top foods craved most by pregnant women!

Salt It’s thought that a craving for salt may be – for most women – due to an increase in blood volume, which

can change the dietary need for sodium. For that reason food items like potato crisps are especially popular, but remember that these will exceed your sodium requirements!

Pickles Ah pickles...for so many years the ‘staple’ craving in pregnancy. Whether you crave their crunchiness, their taste or simply the vinegar...don’t be too worried about over-indulging in pickles, since they’re low in calories.

Vinegar On occasion, what starts out as a pickle craving can develop into a near addiction to vinegar! In fact, some pregnant women have admitted to drinking it straight from the bottle! If you’re affected by this particular craving, you’ll find that you suffer badly >
