travel from far and wide to take part in this historic occasion; “Where possible we’ll be using local catering rather than bringing in ‘outsider’ companies and we’ll do all we can so local shops can have stands and stalls across the town.” There will be fundraising over the next few years and Gina says it will be on a big scale as the whole project, being led by Plymouth, is likely to cost over five million pounds. The Government has already kicked things off with half a million contribution and Plymouth are putting in for Heritage Lottery Funding which Dartmouth should get a slice of. For now Gina has to turn into a bit of a history detective;


“It’s my aim to research the people who were on board both the Mayflower and the speedwell. It was through speedwell’s leaking that both the ships sought help in Dartmouth, so we’re only a part of the incredible Mayflower story through chance.” It’s estimated that there are 25 million descendants of the Pilgrims alive in the world today and Gina says she’d love to find one or two of them living in the Devon area. Gina says this is the perfect time for people to start


considering the potential of a huge Mayflower event in four years time; “We really are just at the beginning of this exciting project and the plans and ideas are changing and growing on a weekly basis.” The team is keen to encourage residents and businesses to get involved as soon as possible; “We’re already working with the Academy and the students there are starting on some of our projects” says Gina, “we really want everyone to be part of what could be a spectacular event.”•
