Computing Talking Technology!

Stop Typing, Start Talking

Whether you use Google as a web page or on your mobile phone, you will find a little microphone at the end of a long white search bar. If you click on it, it activates the voice command. You can also say “oK Google” to activate it. so instead of typing, just say your search request. For example, you can say “what is the temperature today?” Google will talkback and tell you the temperature.

Google Talks Back There are many commands that you can use where Google can talk back. Try the following:

•• How do I get to Brighton?

• Where is my nearest chinese restaurant? • What is the exchange rate pounds to euros? • How old is Michael Caine? What is BPs share price?

• What is the population of France?

Computing has changed exponentially in the past 5 years and one of the biggest changes is the ability to “talk” to your computer, tablet or mobile. Apple has “siri” and Microsoft has “Cortana” but the most accurate and most intuitive is Google.

Google links into Wikipedia and other data sources, so if there is a definitive answer to your question, it will answer by talking back to you. It is also intuitive. For example, if you ask “How old is Michael Caine?” and Google will say “Michael Caine is 82”. Then ask, “Where was he born?” Google knows that you are still talking about Michael Caine.

Start Talking to Your Phone

Where voice commands become seriously useful is with a smartphone running Google’s Android operating system. Activate the microphone and say “Call the Flavel” and it will find the Flavel’s number and telephone it for you. Ask Google to “call” someone in your address book. With smartphones, Google knows where you are so you can ask “where is the nearest car park” or “take me to Blackpool

sands” and it will link into GPs and Google Maps for directions. If you have music on your phone, tell Google to play a specific song by saying “Play….” open any App on your phone by saying “open….. .” If you have a Gmail account, tell Google to “send an email”. Google is very accurate but make sure you speak as clearly as possible. These are just some of the commands for voice. Try it out for yourself - have fun!
