Campaign goes on for Bearsted shops
THE campaign continues to se- cure listing for the parade of shops near Bearsted village green following a ruling by English Heritage that the building did not merit this. The Bearsted and Thurnham So-
ciety, backed by concerned local residents` has appealed to the De- partment for Culture, Media and Sport to review the decision. Mary Richards, secretary of the society, said: “On studying the documentation, we have decided to submit an appeal. Throughout the whole process, we have re- mained in touch with the three businesses and our MP who has been incredibly supportive.” The appeal is based on four main points, including “that the decision was made wrongly because signif- icant relevant considerations re- garding the buildings rarity were not fully taken into account” and that no comparisonwas made with the colonnade at Hawkhurst to
which the society referred in its original submission. This buildingwas the only one in
Kent that bore comparison with the parade and it was granted grade II listed status some years ago.
Bearsted residents had protested
to save their shops which have al- ready been the subject of two plan- ning proposals to demolish and rebuild, with flats above. It was thought that the Victorian canopy, in particular, should be preserved. However, English Heritage felt
that the architectural and historical interests of the building did not meet the criteria for listing, al- though it did make a positive con- tribution the character of the conservation area. Boroughward Cllr Val Springett
said the refusal was very disap- pointing but the shops did retain a certain level of protection, being a very prominent feature in the Bearsted Green conservation area.

Hook and Hatchet open
THE Hook and Hatchet at Hucking is celebrating a new lease of life as a free house, after being bought from the Shepherd Neame Brewery. Owners Sharon Hodgson (45) and
Allan Bishop (53) are keen to make their mark after the pub saw a series of business failures as a tied house. The development has been wel-
comed by locals who launched a campaign to buy the pub when it was finally put on the market, fear- ing it would close and the site would be redeveloped. Sharon, whoran a pub for several
years in Norfolk, where she grew up, has teamedupwithAllan –who refurbishes pubs – to sink their ef-
forts into their own business. She believes buying the pub and putting their passion into the opera- tion will succeed where the efforts of previous tenants have failed. She said: “I feel at home here al-
ready andwe have long-term plans to stay.” The couple will continue to im-
prove the pub and their living ac- commodation over the next five
years. After thesummerthey will be taking on two chefs and will serve roast dinners from September. However, Sharon pointed out that there are no plans to turn the pub into a restaurant. “We intend to serve simple, good pub grub.”
