‘Super benefice’ plan for village churches

HOLLINGBOURNEcould become part of a “super benefice”, sharing its vicar with a wider area, as the Church attempts to deploy its min- isters more effectively. The proposed re-organisation fol-

lows vacancies in the North Downs benefice, including the retirement of Rev Nigel Fry in Leeds and Holling- bourne last year. The Canterbury Diocese plans to

merge Hollingbourne, Hucking, Boxley, Thurnham, Detling, Leeds, Broomfield, Kingswood, Langley and Otham. Details of the proposed “Benefice

of North Downs” have been posted on church doors across the area. In Hollingbourne, the Parochial Church Council hopes a “team vicar” appointed early next year will live at Hollingbourne vicarage. The team rector – currently Rev John Corbyn – will be based in Bearsted with another team vicar in Otham. The vicars will take services in all

of the churches supported by a new Missioner, who will be recruited to develop the church’s mission on housing estates in the area, such as

Taylor welcomed the deanery’s re- configuration plan and claimed it in- creased the ministry by 0.5 of a person and allowed it to be more flexible in meeting the area’s needs. The public consultation runs until

Mike Revell, received five com- plaints about the noise. He attended the event and said the sound at site level “wasn’t too bad” but those in the eastwere able to hear it for miles. He added: “It doesn’t seem the council has a hands-on policy. I am going to look into it.” Awalker near Chegworth said: “I

could hear the lead guitar and the drums perfectly. It didn’t bother me. Whitesnake aren’t going to be quiet, are they?” An MBC spokesman said that 35 complaints had been received about noise levels which he claimed were within “agreed limits”.
