downsmail.co.uk Ukip eyes on the county prizes

THE by-election to replace Ukip borough councillor Dave Sergeant, who died in May, is unlikely to take place until September, accord- ing to a party colleague. Cllr Sergeant, the Ukip group

leader, died suddenly of a heart at- tack in May. Friend and fellow Ukip councillor

Eddie Powell said that local people, post-Brexit, have “probably have had enough of elections”. Although anyone can call a by-

election under the rules, conven- tion usually allows the incumbent party to make that choice. Cllr Powell said: “We’d call it

fairly soon so that the by-election would be sometime around Sep- tember time. We’d want to give people a bit of a summer holiday – they’ve probably had enough of elections lately.” Ukip is likely to putupa full slate

of county council candidates for the divisions inside the Faversham and Mid-Kent constituency, which takes in Maidstone south east. Although Cllr Powell said he is

“not sure” who will fight the in- cumbent Tory Gary Cooke, some observers locally believe it will be the Ukipper himself. Cllr Cooke, pictured far right, has conceded in the past he may not

have won in 2013 if Ukip had put up a candidate. In the meantime, there is no guaran- tee that Cllr Cooke will himself make it onto the list of Conservative can- didate as party rules allow any number of chal- lengers.Hefaces at

least two, one ofwhomis believed to

be based in Swale.

Cooke said: “People have asked me if I don’t get selected whether I would stand as an inde- pendent and I have said that I probably would do that. But we’ll have to wait and see.”

for being a conscientious member – has been a vocal opponent of hous- ing expansion in Maidstone, unless the council can demonstrate it can provide the infrastructure to support it. Cllr Powell, pictured on the left, said the Faversham and Mid Kent branch of Ukipnowhad around 200 members and rising. Ukip, he said, was necessary since the government must be held to account over Brexit and made to honour its pledges.
