CITY GOVERNMENT CITY OFFICIALSMountain View MOUNTAIN VIEW

– Billing itself as the “Folk Music Capitol of the World,” Mountain View has a rich tradi- tion of preserving folk music and culture. It hosts the Arkansas Folk Festival, various folk artists at Ozark Folk Center State Park throughout the year, and weekly music gatherings on the courthouse steps that are free and open to the public. The largest city and

county seat of Stone County, Mountain View is also known for

its outdoor recrea- tions, including Blan- chard Springs Cav- erns, trout fishing on the White River and the Ozark National Forest. Located

of AR Highways 5, 9, 14 and 66, Mountain View rests north of Greers Ferry Lake, to the east of Marshall, to the south of Mountain Home and to the west of Batesville. It has a

population of 2,838 residents according to the 2010 census. The mayor is Roger

Gardner and Peggy Lancaster serves as city clerk. The fire chief is Curt Decker and B.J. Day is the chief of police. Mountain View’s

name derives from its location in a valley bordered by the Blue Mountain Range of the Ozark Mountains. It was incorporated on August 14, 1890. The Stone County

Ironworks, a national- ly-known company that produces iron furniture, fixtures and housewares, is head- quartered in Mountain View. Two major festivals

dominate the Moun- tain View calendar, the Ozark Folk Festival and the Arkansas Bean Fest and Great Championship Out- house Races. Held every April, the Ozark Folk Festival features a parade, folk craft vendors and live folk music. During the last week of October, near- ly one ton of pinto beans are cooked up in large, antique kettles along the court square and free beans and cornbread are served to the crowd. The festival continues with the Outhouse Race, where teams of partic- ipants push outhouses built on wheels (simi- lar to a go-kart) in a series of races. Hand-
