Battle to save lollipop patrols

By KERENZA MOORE

‘SAVE our school crossing pa- trols’ is the cry going up across Cornwall as 19 lollipop men and women face the axe. Among them is Marie Morford,

who has been helping children cross the road in Dobwalls for 28 years. More than 100 people have signed

a petition in the village in the hope of changing Cornwall Council’s de- cision. ‘I knew it was coming, and I’m not upset, I’m just bitter for the sake of the children,’ said Marie. ‘We’ve got new estates going up

in Dobwalls and there will be more children coming to school each day – heaven forbid there should be an accident.’ Marie has been a dedicated cross-

ing patrol, going to work with bro- ken limbs and even when she was battling breast cancer. She has seen several near-misses

and says that not all drivers stick to the 30mph speed limit.

Meanwhile, a broader online pe-

tition has reached almost 1,500 sig- natures. The campaign was started by fa-

ther Thomas Stapleton-Yabsley, who says that the stretch of road near Burraton Primary School, Saltash, is dangerous. In South East Cornwall, four

school crossing patrols are among those to be cut in July. Places affected are Dobwalls,

Callington (New Road), and Saltash (at Fairmead Road and on Liskeard Road). A spokesperson for Cornwall

Council said that the 19 sites iden- tified were not busy enough, in terms of vehicles passing and num- bers of children using the crossing, to qualify for continued funding: ‘We recognise that school crossing patrols are greatly valued by both parents and schools, and so we are offering to continue to provide training, uniforms and equipment, if the individual schools are pre- pared to meet the costs of employ- ing the patrols.’

Vote was ‘too big to miss’

England’s top hidden gem is

revealed...

LISKEARD has topped a poll by coach company National Express to uncover the nation’s ‘hidden gems’. The coach operator carried out the sur-

vey, it said, ‘to recognise places offering real tourist charm’ and encourage people to travel to some of England’s smaller towns and villages. Liskeard pulled in more than a quarter

of the votes in the poll of 1,000 people – clearly ahead of Wells in Somerset, which came in second. The rest of the top 10 was: 3 Bakewell (Derbyshire). 4 Thirsk (North Yorkshire). 5 Grange-over-Sands (Cumbria). 6 Starcross (Devon). 7 Bidford-on-Avon (Warwickshire). 8 Mablethorpe (Lincolnshire). 9 Frinton-on-Sea (Essex). 10 Ashby-de-la-Zouch (Leicestershire). Liskeard Tourist Information Centre

manager Tina Barrett said: ‘It’s very excit- ing, a real shot in the arm for the town.’ Tina plans to use the news to market

Liskeard on social media. Town Councillor Hella Tovar said: ‘It’s

great news. People are often all too keen to diss Liskeard, but you only have to look up to see how lovely it is.’ National Express managing director

Tom Stables said: ‘We hope our list helps reveal Liskeard’s charms to people fur- ther afield. ‘With lovely leisure trails and stacks of

old-school charm, for many people Liskeard truly is a hidden gem.’

SARAH Tiltman, of Liskeard, about to cast her vote

VOTERS in South East Corn- wall went to the polls yesterday to have their say in one of the most important decisions for a generation: whether to stay in, or leave, the European Union. The sun was shining as

Liskeard couple Mavis and Pe- ter Hooper arrived to vote at the Public Hall. ‘We’re voting because we’ve got the chance to, and so we should,’ they said.

‘Everyone should vote in this.’ For first-time voter Sarah Tilt- man, of Liskeard, the referen- dum was ‘too big to miss’. ‘Every other time there’s

been a major vote, I’ve not been here, and I haven’t arranged a postal vote,’ said Sarah, 32. ‘But this vote is too big to

miss. However the vote goes, a lot rides on it – it’s going to af- fect people whatever happens.’
