Liskeard Show 2016 - a great family day out Message from the President
The second Saturday in July has been an important date in the household diary for many years - Liskeard Show of course! Initially my involvement with the show was when Mike and I started showing our Dexter cattle. After a few years I was asked to take on the job of Membership Secretary being assured that we would not have to stop showing our cattle as the Membership work was done before show day!
Liskeard is well known as being a friendly and welcoming show for all the family with, I am pleased to say, keeping agriculture very much at its heart. The Association is very lucky in having a team of dedicated volunteers who work throughout the year to prepare for this one day show.
I am honoured to be President for the 2016 Show and I am very much looking forward to the day.

I have asked last year’s President, Owen Hoskin, if he would arrange for the weather to be as last year which was just about perfect for showing. He assures me he will do his best!

Message from the chairman
This year, I have to say, has been one of the easiest for me as the General Secretary, Beckie, has really got to grips with all aspects of the Show preparation and administration and has made my life considerably easier.
With this in mind, I have decided that I will be stepping down as Show Chairman after this year’s Show. I believe that for a new Chairman, it will be easier to slot into the role and give that person chance to bring some fresh ideas to the role and help to keep the Show vibrant and relevant to a one day event. The Show links the rural and urban communities and ensures that new generations understand where there food comes from and as importantly what good quality looks like by seeing the competitions and judging that occurs. These display the best of all aspects of farming. With the cookery demonstrations and the Domestic Tent competitions this all adds to the picture and gives meaning to the expression “from plough to plate” and the pride the farmers take in producing high quality food for there customers
Having made the decision it gave me reason to think back over the Shows where I’ve been Chairman. From blazing hot days where the heat causes issues around livestock care and visitor comfort (but the ice-cream venders loved it) to heavy matting to reinforce routes around the showground due to the ground conditions (“The Show will go on”) to the ultimate decision to postpone the Show because of the ground conditions and weather forecast both conspire to make it realistically impossible to hold the Show. (This was not a decision that was easily taken as the extra work involved for all the secretaries and general secretary in re- arranging all the required infrastructure created additional work that was more than the benefits achieved). Though the majority of Show days still gave good

enough weather and ground condition to make the Show a success.
Really though the success is down to the support of the landowners, the team of volunteers and the supporters who turn in each year to get the site ready, run the day and then help dismantle and clear away after the Show. These are the true core of the Show and I have to say it’s been a pleasure working with them over the years.
One of the last tasks I’ve been seeking to complete is changing the Shows constitution to bring it in line with the latest guidance from the Charity Commission.
After the AGM following the Show, The Association will become a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) This will allow the Show to meet current legislation and reporting requirements, give slightly more freedom in how donations can be made and also give greater protection from those involved in its management and operation. We are well underway with this move to a CIO and registering it with the Charity Commissioners.
So all that’s left is to now hope that for my last Show as Chairman the weather allows me to have a really good day out and provide a Show that everyone attending enjoys.

Last year was my first show as General Secretary and it was lovely to wake up to the sun shining. The lovely weather brought in the crowds and I think a combination of the good weather, large crowd and the animals returning to the old show field created a wonderful buzz around the showground throughout the day. How do we beat that!

This year we have an action packed day of attractions, agriculture and trade in store and not forgetting fun!
We welcome in the main ring the fantastic Vander Brothers Duo Wheel attraction. This world renowned act will have you holding your breath with their display of balance and movement to music. We have them scheduled in the
ring to perform on 3 occasions so you will have plenty of opportunities to see them. We also welcome 2 springer spaniels and 2 Labradors who along with their respective owners will be providing a gun dog demonstration in the main ring.
Last year we expanded the Countryside Area of the show. The area worked so well it will be returning this year with additional attractions including a Saw Mill and Blacksmith/Iron mongers demonstrations.
Thank you to the committee members for all your support over the last 12 months and thank you in advance to the general public for coming along to the show and continuing to support our wonderful, local agricultural show.
